Megan Moroney's new album, Cloud 9, is finally out, and when the ‘Tennessee Orange’ singer-songwriter hinted that she wouldn't be holding back, it looks like she wasn't joking.
Of course, given all the conjecture that has surrounded Moroney, Riley Green and Ella Langley in the past year or so, fans have been scouring the lyrics to try and find a thinly veiled reference to the supposed love triangle (which, it's worth highlighting before we get carried away, has never been confirmed by any of the artists).
And it seems fans have found it. On ’Who Hurt You?’, a sleek, infectious break-up anthem, Moroney begins by crooning, “I was blinded by the lies / And the manufactured smile / The devil went down to Georgia / Then he crossed the 'Bama line”.
Green is from Alabama, with many speculating that this track is about their reported split. The two artists were spotted driving around Green's hometown in Alabama last Spring, and there's a line on ‘Who Hurt You?’ that some believe to be a nod to this meet-up, with Moroney singing, “Hometown happy hours / The hand-delivered flowers / You looked me in the eyes and told me what was yours was ours”.
Elsewhere on ‘Who Hurt You?’, Moroney criticises her old flame's “manufactured smile”. Fans have long claimed that Green got veneers last year, and as a result, many are taking to social media to suggest this lyric could be another subtle dig.
The ‘Am I Okay?’ chart-topper hinted in the lead-up to Cloud 9 that ‘Who Hurt You?’ would contain some tea, explaining to Elaina Smith that she was brutally honest in this song so that doesn't “have to answer interview questions about the situation”.
It's possible Moroney was referring to another “situation” rather than the one involving Green, but the fact that she mentioned getting asked interview questions about the relationship certainly makes it seem like it's about this rumoured romance.
Aside from being spotted driving around together, Moroney and Green were seen on vacation together in the US Virgin Islands, before the former revealed to a fan during a show that was wearing a t-shirt with Green's face on it that “he f***ed up”.
One thing's for sure, as is tradition, Moroney will never officially confirm who any of her songs are about, and she's no stranger to speculation of this kind, with her break-out single, ‘Tennessee Orange’, being the centre of a furore regarding Morgan Wallen. But regardless of who ‘Who Hurt You?’ is actually about, it's a certified earworm amidst a range of empowering anthems on Cloud 9, with the ‘Six Months Later’ hitmaker serving up yet another stellar, enchanting body of work.
