As Post Malone gears up to release his debut country album, fans are watching with keen eyes to see what the genre-blending maverick has up his sleeve for the weeks to come.
And it's not just fans - a number of artists within the genre have expressed their desire to work with Posty, now that he's officially venturing into Music City for the first time.
In an upcoming interview with Holler, Yellowstone star and fellow country debutant, Luke Grimes, revealed he's a big fan of Post Malone and that he'd love to work with him.
Grimes is currently readying his first full-length country album, Luke Grimes, for March 8, with the widely renowned actor having shared a plethora of stellar singles last year.
When the Ohio singer-songwriter made his transition from acting to country music back in December 2022 with the release of his debut single, ‘No Horse To Ride’, many fans celebrated Grimes’ decision to try his hand at the genre. However, given that he'd made his name on the silver screen, there was also some scepticism as to whether this was merely a commercial move - doubts that he's now completely dispersed through his sparse and critically acclaimed releases so far.
Now that Luke Grimes’ authenticity is no longer questioned, does he have any advice for Post Malone, who is still in the early stages of his foray into country music, and has been met with similar cynicism from some corners of the genre?
Grimes laughs modestly, “I have no advice whatsoever for Post Malone. I think that guy's doing great. I don't think he needs my advice! He's crushing life, and has been for a long time”.
He goes on to emphasise his admiration for Post Malone's versatility, referencing Posty's now-iconic set at Matthew McConaughey's We're Texas benefit, “He's an amazing musician. I can't wait to hear his country music. I think he's super talented. I saw like a clip of him from like six or seven years ago, covering a Brad Paisley song [‘I'm Gonna Miss Her’], and even then, I was like, ‘I cannot wait until that guy does country because he's sounds awesome’. But yeah - no advice for Post Malone. Just keep going, maybe. Keep doing what you're doing”.
That Brad Paisley cover was the moment many others realised Posty's country prowess, as well as consolidating the Hip Hop titan's deep-seated affection towards the genre. It had such an impact that Brad even temporarily changed his TikTok bio to ‘I write songs for Post Malone’, as well as complimenting Posty's version, “Always humbling when another artist does your song better than you”.
Luke Grimes’ stylistic tendencies seem to lean towards the lo-fi, outlaw-inspired blueprint laid out by Colter Wall, Zach Bryan and other Yellowstone favourites.
Judging from the song he teased in February with Luke Combs, it seems Post Malone has opted for a more Nashvillian approach for his debut country album, with Posty teasing collaborations with Morgan Wallen, ERNEST and - aptly - Brad Paisley himself.
Nonetheless, Post Malone has made no secret of the fact he's always been a huge fan of alt-country trailblazers such as Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers and Colter Wall, so we think a blockbuster duet with Luke Grimes would make a lot of sense.
Excitingly, Luke Grimes confirms to Holler that he would jump at the opportunity to work with Post Malone on a new song, “Absolutely. 100%. No matter what the form is, there are real artists in this world and I think he's one of them, you know? I would like to be around as many real artists as I possibly can in this life”.
While we eagerly look forward to the tantalising prospect of a link-up between Post Malone and Luke Grimes, we'll have plenty of music from both artists to keep us entertained in the meantime, with Posty and Luke both preparing their debut country albums.
