The year may be quickly coming to a close, but 2024 is far from over for Koe Wetzel.

The ‘Damn Near Normal’ star has been riding high this past year. The last few months alone have seen the artist kick off his biggest international headline tour to date, including a sold-out show at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre, release his latest studio effort, 9 Lives, enjoy his first foray into the Billboard Hot 100 and share a stage with the one and only country megastar, Morgan Wallen.

Wetzel was just preparing for the European leg of his wide-ranging tour when he takes a moment to speak with Holler about his biggest year yet, his most vulnerable album to date and his plans to top it all in the not-so-distant future.

“We leave tomorrow night and head to Europe for two or three weeks,” he says as if reading from a to-do list. He’s had less than a week off since his Red Rocks appearance, bookending a momentous tour run with studio time, this interview – and likely several others – as well as preparing for the transcontinental jaunt.

If it sounds exhausting, that’s because it is. But Wetzel wouldn’t have it any other way. “I’m worn down, but at the same time, it's a good tired, you know,” he offers, excited to be sharing his music with even more fans around the world and eager to do it all again in 2025. “Everything is coming together as planned,” he adds. “We got a lot of cool stuff coming up. We're really excited to be this tired.”

In addition to reflecting on a momentous 2024, Wetzel discusses his latest collaborations, opens up about his deeply personal new release, and hints at what’s still to come from the incendiary showman.

On supporting Morgan Wallen at AT&T Stadium:

“Opening up for Morgan Wallen was really cool and, especially, to do it at AT&T Stadium, where the Cowboys play, that's always been a dream of mine. So shout out to Morgan for letting us come in.

He was awesome. He's doing it right now. And it was really cool to be on the same stage with him and see that many people coming out.”

On releasing his bonus track, ‘Good Times’:

“We went in to write a song for the newer project that we’ve started working on. I think I was severely hungover that day. We walked in there, and I was writing with some new people. And, there was just something about, I guess, kind of missing the party.

I slowed down a lot this year, especially with the 9 Lives record, with the writing that went into that. We talked about it, and I was like, ‘I kind of missed that, you know, I kind of miss the party.’ But everybody was like, ‘Well, you're kind of hammered drunk right now. Do you miss it that much?’ So that inspired the whole thing. No matter what, if I leave the party, it's still going to keep on going”.

It's just kind of reflecting on the past 10 years of my life compared to how it is now.”

On closing his ‘9 Lives’ chapter:

“I felt like there was just a lot that needed to be said, and I kind of got that out with the 9 Lives record. We'll never stop making music like we did before 9 Lives, I feel like that'll always be a part of who I am as an artist. That music will always be there. I'll always make music like that. I've always come away from a project that’s very raw and real, and that'll always continue to be the same.”

On his Jessie Murph collaboration, ‘High Road’:

“Jessie's the best. She absolutely killed it and it was really cool to get to do that song with her. To have the fans and everybody gravitate toward and play it, it's really sick.

We got together probably a year or two ago and sat down and wrote a song. We've been trying to work together for a couple of years, and just couldn't get that song down how we wanted it. With ‘High Road’, it was just a Koe Wetzel cut, and I wanted to see what a girl's point of view was. I was like, ‘This has got to be Jessie Murph.’ So we hollered at her and she wrote the verse, sent it back to me, and I was like, ‘Hell yeah. This is it.’ She went in, crushed it. It just went platinum, so yeah, it was great.”

On his conflicting feelings toward collaborations:

"I'm not really that big on the collabs. Every collab I've ever done I've loved and I'm glad I did it, but it's just like, I don't know, it's kind of weird for me. These were the first collabs that I ever did with Ella [Langley] and with Jessie, then with Kodak [Black] and Diplo. It’s different. I mean, it's a lot of fun. It really is. They usually do better, so maybe I should do more of them.”

On what’s in the works for 2025:

“We're gonna come out with some new music. We don't know exactly when. We've got a lot of songs that didn't make the record. We had some songs before that we thought about putting out and just didn't, so we got a lot of music in the vault. We're already writing for the new record. The flame is hot right now, so I guess we got to take advantage of it.

We're very blessed to be where we're at. We're ready for 2025. I still got a lot of shit to say, so be ready for it.”
