Charlie Overbey is a Southern Californian Americana artist and the maker of Lone Hawk Hats, so naturally he’s along-time lover of hats. He’s teamed up with two of his hat loving buddies on his latest single ‘Champagne, Cocaine, Cadillacs and Cash.’

"This song is my version of ’The Gambler,’” Charlie Overbey explains. “You gotta know when to walk away and know when to run. I picked my two best friends I would think of to sit at the poker table with me for this song, Marcus King and Jaime Wyatt.”

“A great hat can change your life in an instant,” the slogan of Lone Hawk Hats says, and just like a hat, a great song can do exactly the same.

"I create custom vintage hats from shells originally made in the USA long ago when quality was held dearly above quantity," he says about Lone Hawk Hats; hats that are sculpted, restyled and reshaped by hand using only the highest quality vintage shells available and using environmentally safe materials as worn by everyone from Lainey Wilson, Chris Robinson and Blackberry Smoke to the camps of Miranda Lambert and Miley Cyrus and the cast of 1883.

It’s a craft Overbey taught himself by trial and error, and that same authenticity, attention to detail and commitment to quality runs through his music.

The first taste of Overbey’s forthcoming album, ‘Champagne, Cocaine, Cadillacs and Cash’ is a tale of one sided toxic relationships delivered with the thumping swagger of Waylon administered with a jab of jittery Muscle Shoals country funk.

“I first met Charlie O back in 2017 or 18 I believe it was," says Marcus King about how the collaboration came about. "I was really struck by Charlie’s gregarious charm, talent, unique style and genuine attitude both on and off the stage - a beautiful friendship blossomed and only continues to grow. Fine quality hats n’ fine quality American music “

Overbey’s first success in the music industry came when his cowpunk outfit Custom Made Scare landed a deal with Side One Dummy Records in 1998. But before the band’s debut album dropped, Overbey went on the run from the law for months, finally turning himself in and spending a year in prison. The very same week he was released, the band hit the road immediately, and toured heavily into the new millennium alongside seminal punk acts such as Suicidal Tendencies, Social Distortion, Agent Orange, Zeke and REO Speedealer.

A side project of Overbey’s called Charlie & The Valentine Killers also toured in the late 2000s with David Allan Coe and Lemmy’s side outfit The Headcat, and the country-leaning project’s sound served as an important precursor to his current solo work.

Charlie Overbey and his band, The Broken Arrows, have just returned from playing The Outlaw Country Cruise 8 and now they’re getting ready to put out a new full-length album, In Good Company, features an incredible array of guests including but not limited to Nils Lofgren, Charlie Starr, Duane Betts, Rami Jaffee and many more, all of whom Charlie has befriended during his colorful career in music.

‘Champagne, Cocaine, Cadillacs and Cash’ is released on March 29th. Presave the song here or by visiting Charlie Overbey's website.
