Are we about to get that long-rumoured MGK country album, after all?

Throughout his career, MGK has become synonymous with his penchant for genre-blurring, with the ‘forget me too’ hitmaker experimenting with rap, punk, rock and more.

Last year, MGK tried his hand at country music, with the ‘bloody valentine’ crooner dropping a cover of the Zach Bryan deep cut, ‘Sun to Me’, before teaming up with his good friend, Jelly Roll, for the John Denver-interpolating hit, ‘Lonely Road’. It went on to win the People's Choice Country Award for Best Crossover Song.

Since then, MGK has been completing the occasional country side quest - such as performing ‘Lonely Road’ with Lainey Wilson in Nashville last September - but he has repeatedly confirmed to fans that he isn't working on a full country album.

Now, though, a comment on Instagram has caught our eye, and has us wondering whether MGK is plotting another foray into the country music world next year.

Chandler Walters, a neo-traditional country phenom who has penned hits such as Post Malone and Morgan Wallen's ‘I Had Some Help’, has shared a November ‘photo dump’, including shots of Walters seemingly working on some new material.

It's pretty innocuous, and doesn't feature any of the typical easter eggs we've grown accustomed to in today's landscape. You might expect to see Wallen's shoulder creeping into frame, for instance, or Posty's tattooed hand holding a cigarette, perhaps, leading to fan speculation running wild about new music from either one.

No, the clue we think we've spotted is found in the comments. Bailey Zimmerman has once again exuded his endearing “Golden Retriever energy” by commenting a multitude of times, offering some general words of praise and love for Walters. But just beneath this, you'll see a comment from MGK, jokingly lamenting, “can’t believe i didn’t make the cut for the dump guys @bailey.zimmerman”.

Walters has replied, “Dam okay hol up”, with Zimmerman teasing, “hahahaha how did a pic of us not end up in the dump ”. Unless we've misread the situation, it seems Walters, MGK and Zimmerman all spent some time together in November, and MGK was playfully chastising Walters for not including a photo of them.

Of course, it's possible they were just hanging out as buddies. But we're wondering if this pointed comment was a not-so-subtle hint that MGK is working with country songwriters again, and is potentially gearing up for another country drop.

Walters would undoubtedly be a fantastic choice for an artist attempting to break down boundaries between genres, given the fact that the steel guitar virtuoso played a key role in crafting Post Malone's debut country album, F-1Trillion, last summer. Similarly, Zimmerman is no stranger to genre-fusing collaborations, having joined forces with The Kid Laroi and BigXthaPlug in recent months.

We'll have to wait and see exactly what MGK has up his sleeve for the near future, but after dropping his pop-leaning Lost Americana album in August to widespread acclaim, and then hopping on one of the stand-outs from NF's new EP, ‘WHO I WAS’, this month, the cross-genre trailblazer is showing no signs of slowing down...
