There are two sides to every story, even the ones you've heard time and time again. Just Jayne's debut single, 'This Morning,' takes the biggest country hit of the last few years, Morgan Wallen's 'Last Night,' and flips the script to give us the down low on the morning after a drunken night of romance told from a female perspective.

If there's one thing we can all agree on in the Holler offices it's that we could always do with more girl groups in country music. We've got Trousdale and Remember Monday and Runaway June - who coincidentally have a brand new single out this week too (awks) - but here at Holler we are still demanding more girl groups in country!

All-women trios are a rare and precious thing in country music. The Chicks, Pistol Annies, SHEdaisy, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris; they don't come around these parts too often, and pop country variants are even rarer still.

With their debut track out today, Just Jayne might just be the country pop girl group we've been waiting for. Formed by Jillian Steele (New Yorker; nicknamed "Gigi; celebrity crush, Larry David), Taylor Edwards (born in Sacramento, CA; Spice Girls fan and lifelong Belieber; broke up with toxic ex recently) and Rachel Wiggins (born in Fairhope, Indiana; favourite band, The Pistols Annies; nicknamed "Little Dad" by the band) who, after releasing music separately, decided to join forces as the intriguingly named Just Jayne.

Possibly inspired by either a WWII Lancaster Bomber, a hard Welsh cheese or the salacious Jane's Journal comic strip that ran in the Daily Mirror in Britain in the 1940s starring the titular "Just Jane" as 'Queen of the Undie-World' (a heroine who had a habit of frequently accidentally losing her clothes), Just Jayne (the country pop trio) have a playful pop sensibility and an irreverence that sets them apart from bands like The Castellows or Restless Road.

Apart from soaking up '90s country influences from The Chicks and Shania Twain, Just Jayne's most telling contemporary reference point might be Maddie & Tae, whose table turning bro-country bashing feminist anthem 'Girl in a Country Song' turned country music on its head when it was released in 2014 and feels like a template for Just Jayne's 'This Morning.'

Watch the 'Worktape' video for 'This Morning' below.

'This Morning' also carries on a lineage of country answer songs that wrestle with gender politics, whether it was Kitty Wells 'It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels' in response to Hank Thompson's sympathetic take on philandering honky tonking husbands or Jody Miller's 'Queen of the House,' calling bullshit on the gender gaps papered over in Roger Miller's 1965 hit 'King of the Road.'

Now, after performing with Maddie & Tae at CMA Fest in Nashville last year, Just Jayne are going out on tour with the duo later in the year.

"Stop scrolling if you need to leave you toxic ex in 2024," they shared on TikTok along with a teaser for the single. "This song's for you."

@justjaynemusic stop!!! scrolling!!! (but also go hit that pre-save button if you want this song!!) #newmusic #girlgroup #justjayne #thismorning #countrysongsoftiktok ♬ original sound - just jayne

“‘This Morning’ was the second song we ever wrote together, and the session just felt like three best friends venting about old toxic relationships,” Just Jayne shared. “It tells the story of that person you keep going back to over and over again and finally waking up one day and realizing you deserve better — taking the driver’s seat and saying IT’S OVER!!!!! Everyone has that one person they think of when they hear this song, and whether you’ve been there and are out of it, or you’re singing it to convince yourself to put that toxic cycle to an end, we hope you scream this song at the top of your lungs with your best friends it heals you a little, like it did for us.”

After posting their first video in April 2024, their infectious original songs and loveably shambolic bathroom mirror dance routines have been winning over the hearts of country music fans across TikTok.

@justjaynemusic and they didn’t quit the band either 🥲❤️ #newmusic #girlgroup #band #breakupsong #songwriters ♬ making smart girls dumbbbb - just jayne

If their behind-the-scenes "worktapes" of yet to be released songs like 'All Backroads,' 'New Boots' and 'Making Smart Girls Dumb' are anything to go by then Just Jayne could well be everything we drunkenly imagined when we said "I just wish there was a country version of Atomic Kitten" after a few too many spicy margaritas at the Holler Christmas party.

'This Morning' by Just Jayne is out now on UMG Recordings and The Core Records.
