Charles Wesley Godwin has once again paid tribute to one of his songwriting heroes, the late Gordon Lightfoot.
In partnership with Amazon Music, the 'Hardwood Floors' star released a cover of Lightfoot's 1974 classic, 'Sundown,' as part of a new flagship playlist from the music streaming service.
“I believe Gordon to have been one of the greatest songwriters of our time and felt this opportunity with Amazon Music was perfect to shine a light on one of his most popular songs a little over 50 years after its original release date,” the artist shares of the opportunity. “Hopefully, through this version that me and the guys recorded, a new generation of music listeners can be introduced to Gordon’s music and become fans of his themselves.”
For the launch of “bonfire,” the platform's genre-blending playlist that gathers emotive, songwriting-focused tunes from the latest generation of musical storytellers, Godwin's take on 'Sundown' is the perfect starting point.
The mood-based playlist is meant to "fit a vibe that’s sentimental, woody, and crackling with fire,” according to Emily Cohen, Amazon Music's country programming lead.
Of the "bonfire" playlist overall, Godwin adds, “It’s such an honor to be included in a playlist like this with so many amazing artists. Keeping company like this is all I ever could have wished for when I set out on this path of music. ‘bonfire’ is so fitting for those special moments in life when we’re enjoying the company of our friends and family.”
This is not the first time Godwin has paid homage to Lightfoot. Shortly after the Canadian folk legend's passing on May 1, 2023, he shared a touching rendition of the artist's striking opus, ‘The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.’
Much like Lightfoot, Godwin is known for his song-telling prowess. The star has quickly climbed the ranks of folk-Americana stardom with his impressive songwriting abilities, a talent he'll be flexing on the road throughout the year.
