WATCH: Avery Anna and Sam Barber Perform Soul-Stirring Unreleased Song, ‘Fear in God’

Avery Anna and Sam Barber continue to cement themselves as one of country music's most prolific duos, with the artists performing a powerful new song, ‘Fear in God’, in Atlanta.

It finds the artists reflecting on their faith journey, with Anna introducing the soul-stirring unreleased track by explaining, “Part of my story that I really wanted to tell - and luckily I was able to write this song with Sam and really be able to tell that - is there’s only one person that’s ever walked this earth that knows how you feel and has carried your sorrow with you. And his name is Jesus Christ”.

The Arizona native expands, “I’m fortunate enough to know that to my core, and so there’s something that really helps me throughout my life when I’m really struggling and whenever I’m anxious. And that is, Biblically, when you have fear in the world, it means anxiety and stress and sorrow. But when you have your fear in God, it means reverence and courage and strength. That’s something that me and Sam got to talking about, and we wrote this song…It’s called ‘Fear In God’”.

The track itself is a haunting exploration of how both Anna and Barber lean on their belief in God and Jesus when they are struggling with their mental health. The song pivots movingly around the distinction between having fear “in the world”, such as anxiety about social settings, relationships and so on, and having fear “in God”, which is “fear” in the Biblical sense, meaning respect and reverence for God. When this is your primary fear, they outline, you can enjoy a peaceful state of mind.

They've performed it before while on the road together, with Anna also sharing a stunning acoustic piano rendition of the track via socials in October. We're hoping the fact that they've been treating fans to ‘Fear in God’ a little more frequently of late could be an indication that Anna and Barber are preparing to drop it very soon.

Over the past year or so Anna and Barber have built one of our favourite country partnerships, with their evocative single, ‘Indigo’, going immensely viral towards the end of last year. They also joined forces for ‘Restless Mind’, the title-track from Barber's lauded 2024 album, and have been writing together throughout 2025.

We're keeping our fingers crossed that ‘Fear in God’ may be the lead single from a forthcoming collaborative album, with Anna and Barber having teased other joint tracks in the past. Anna confirmed to Holler in March that they have more on the way, and seeing as none of these co-writes appeared on her stellar 2025 project, let go letters, we suspect they might have been held back for their own record.

‘Fear in God’ would undoubtedly serve as a fantastic introductory song for this next era, with Anna recently venturing into the faith-based space with her electrifying ‘Dusty Bibles’ remix with Josiah Queen. Given how rousing and inspiring ‘Fear in God’ is, we're holding out hope it's not long before we get the studio version...
