Blake Shelton is facing backlash from some fans over his new song 'Minimum Wage'.

The country star, who is also a judge on The Voice, premiered the song during a virtual performance on NBC's televised New Year's Eve special.

Though Shelton claims that the song is about his love for his partner Gwen Stefani, who he got engaged to in October, some listeners have been raising their concerns about what they deem to be controversial lyrics. In it, he sings, "Girl, your love can make a man feel rich on minimum wage".

Shelton has been criticised for being "tone deaf", "insensitive" and unable to "read the room", with fans noting his reported $100m-worth against the economic struggle many are continuing to face as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, others are suggesting that critics should ease off, with one fan saying, “Oh give me a break. He wasn’t always a millionaire, and try listening to the damn song,”. Another commented, “Just get over it, it’s a song and there is worse songs and people than Blake.”

Shelton has yet to issue a public response.
