The Background:

The country Queen of easter eggs laid us an absolute golden doozy in January 2026.

Ahead of the release of her third album, Cloud 9, Megan Moroney dropped ‘Wish I Didn't’, another wit-laced country bop that's somewhat of a plea, mostly a playful threat to her potential love.

After hearing the shortest of snippets during the announcement of her 2026 Cloud 9 world tour, Moroney first teased the song at a substantial length on Instagram Live from a moving bus before the Variety Hitmakers ceremony.

Initially, due to its references to weather (pathetic fallacy, if you will) we believed this would be the title-track. But, on January 13, Moroney revealed the song was actually entitled ‘Wish I Didn't’.

From her car, she mimed along to the song and revealed it would be released the following Friday (January 16th).

The day before it's release, Moroney teased a video for the song featuring reality star, documentary maker (and sibling of Zach), Dylan Efron.

In the iconic video directed by Lauren Dunn, Meg is found living in domestic bliss, but there's something going on behind the scenes of her peaceful life in the big house in the 'burbs.

In a fantastically over-the-top dedication to Mr and Mrs. Smith, Moroney and Efron set out to kill each other, before learning someone has been out for the pair of them this whole time. The video ends on the big cliffhanger, hinting we can expect more from this narrative as Moroney releases more singles from Cloud 9.

The Sound:

‘Wish I Didn’t’ hits with all the hallmarks of a classic Megan Moroney takedown - bright, driving acoustic guitar, punchy pop-inflected beats, and a low hum of fuzzed electric guitar and synth that give the track its bite. Moroney laces an undercurrent of scepticism into her delivery as she reflects on past disappointments, before launching into the euphoric, tongue-in-cheek hook. It's an uptempo earworm reminiscent of Short n’ Sweet era Sabrina Carpenter, and once again showcases Moroney's ear for a killer hook and her penchant for witty lyricism.

The Meaning:

Meg's over here falling for someone, and he better not make her regret it. She sets the scene by admitting that her prospective lover already has a worrying array of red flags and a less-than-ideal reputation, describing his “graveyard of girls before me”.

She warns him not to mess her around, though, emphasising that “Hell hath no fury (like a woman scorned)”. Moroney then drops a weather-inspired piece of juxtaposition, celebrating how it's all “sunshine and blue skies” at the moment, but he should know she can flip the switch and “make it rain” if he decides to betray her trust.

Inevitably, given all the dating conjecture that's been surrounding Moroney, Riley Green and Ella Langley, fans have been keenly trying to decipher every new release to see if they can uncover any thinly veiled references to this supposed love triangle.

Ever since Moroney first teased the “make it rain” lyric, fans have been speculating that this could be a reference to Green's song, ‘Make It Rain’, which is about making a woman cry after letting him down. This could, of course, simply be incidental.

What's refreshing about ‘Wish I Didn't’ is that the protagonist's doubt about this relationship isn't framed as fear or timidity - rather, Moroney is in the driving seat throughout.

It reflects what the ‘Beautiful Things’ singer-songwriter has teased so far about Cloud 9, championing this as her most confident era yet. Moroney concludes this anthemic track by confessing that she's falling for this man, and asking him not to make her wish she didn't. The light-hearted “s***” at the end is a hilarious hint that, by this point, it's too late and she's head over heels - but the red flags persist...

“(One, two, three, four)

-

You've got a hell of a reputation
So here I am patiently waiting
For that other shoe, or should I say boot? To drop
I've heard all of the horror stories
Your graveyard of girls before me
If you play dirty, mmm, how do I say this?
Hell hath no fury

-

You show up, and you've got all the right things to say
It's all sunshine and blue skies, but I can also make it rain

-

Don't make me wish I didn't
Get dressed up, let you take me out
Wreck your bed, make you all I'm talking about
Consider this your warning, you've got one shot to listen
I think I'm falling for you, don't make me wish I didn't

-

I keep every promise that I make
So, baby, believe me when I say
"If you test me, you'll be wishing you never met me"

-

You've been great, but honey, don't get me wrong
Some cold killers have guns, but I've got songs

-

Don't make me wish I didn't
Get dressed up, let you take me out
Wreck your bed, make you all I'm talking about
Consider this your warning, you've got one shot to listen
I think I'm falling for you, don't make me wish I didn't

-

(Yeah, c'mon)
(Don't make me wish I didn't)

-

Roses are red, you'll be so blue
If I take a chance and find out firsthand, they were right about you
Don't make me wish I didn't
Don't make me wish I didn't

-

Don't make me wish I didn't
Get dressed up, let you take me out
Wreck your bed, make you all I'm talking about
Consider this your warning, you've got one shot to listen
I think I'm falling for you, don't make me wish I didn't
Go all in, max my last bet
Don't you dare turn into someone I'll regret
Consider this your warning, you've got one shot to listen
I think I'm falling for you, don't make me wish I didn't

-

(Mmm-mmm, mmm-mmm)
(Don't make me wish I didn't)
(Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh)
Shit (Don't make me wish I didn't)”
