The Background:
Josiah Queen had been teasing ‘when I see you’ extensively across socials in the lead-up to his 2026 studio album, Damascus Road, with fans resigning themselves to the prospect of having to wait until the full project's release before they could hear it.
But then, on Wednesday, September 16th while on-tour in Europe, Queen surprised listeners by dropping ‘when I see you’, making it the latest in a string of much-loved singles from his third album. The song finds Queen reflecting on why he doesn't fear death, underlining that he is excited for the moment he gets to see God's face.
The Sound:
The production on ‘when I see you’ feels a little more built-out and cushioning compared to the pared-down, folky compositions of Queen favourites like ‘Dusty Bibles’ and ‘sundays’.
Queen's evocative vocals cut through the warm, guitar-driven instrumental as he croons about the bittersweet idea of leaving this earth. There's more of a sinuous, slow-burning and undulating feel to ‘when I see you’, compared to the anthemic hooks of ‘Dusty Bibles’ and ‘Watch Your Mouth’, with Queen showcasing his versatility.
The Meaning:
Over the course of ‘when I see you’, Queen contemplates the thought of meeting his Maker for the first time, with the ‘Yesterday is Dead’ singer-songwriter wondering whether God's eyes will be made of fire and His beard like cotton-wool.
He goes on to imagine God's voice being like thunder and His whisker like a “breeze in the night”, before underlining that, ultimately, it doesn't matter about the specifics. He'll just be glad to finally meet God and Jesus, with Queen sharing how he looks forward to leaving the pain and angst of this imperfect world behind.
He stresses that, because he knows he'll get to be in God and Jesus’ presence when he dies, he does not fear death. He wonders whether he'll be moved to dance, sing or do something else entirely when he finally gets to meet the source of his joy.
