The Background

Tucker Wetmore has kept relatively quiet about the inspiration behind ‘Sunburn’, but fans have speculated on his muse since its release in March this year. The ‘Brunette’ singer was seen on vacation on the Island of St. Barthélemy at the same time as Ella Langley in late 2025 and it seems the narrative of ‘Sunburn’ follows that of a holiday romance. Now, it’s worth noting that Wetmore is not listed as a writer on the track and he has said that the track was sent to him while he was away in the Islands, so it’s unlikely that it’s written about Langley, but country music fans love to run away with a romance rumour.

The Sound

The Sunburn Mixtape is a sun-soaked beach country project with bluesy notes and summery steel. Greeted by sounds of the ocean, ‘Sunburn’ quickly fills our ears with funky guitars and a disco-fuelled melody, with Wetmore’s smooth vocals dancing across the beat. There’s a retro-reminiscent edge to the track that conjures images of 70s style beachscapes.

The Meaning

To most, sunburn is a painful, deeply uncomfortable consequence to staying in the sun too long without adequate protection. It sparks little to no joy and can render the victim pretty miserable. And yet, somehow, Tucker Wetmore has managed to make the crispy skin condition seem…romantic?

Wetmore begins his story as most touring musicians do: heading somewhere to play a show. Extending his stay, his beach performance turns into a week-long love affair. Attempting to keep a low profile, the pair agree to keep it quiet but their efforts appear futile as ‘everyone knew’.

Heading into the chorus, Wetmore describes the flurry of romance between the sheets, bodies entwined and hearts full. With no care for finer details like room numbers, the pair wrap up in each other, staying up “all night, all day”. Just as a heatwave cranks temperatures up instantly, Wetmore is enamoured with this woman from the get go. At a surface level, the ‘sunburn’ reference demonstrates the intense intimacy they shared.

However, ‘sunburn’ also carries clear connotations. There is the underlying meaning that this will hurt when it’s over. With an unprotected heart and a day in the sun, there’s no denying that pain will follow the lust. And maybe they knew it all along. With strong suggestions that this song is about a fellow musician, their complicated lives and unpredictable schedules already condemned their connection before it could grow.

"I flew in all alone to play some songs on the beach
Was supposed to be in and out ,ended up stayin' all week
Yeah, there was salt in the air and there was sand on the floor
Was playin' 'Red, Red Wine' and you were sippin' on yours

-

You had your friend come up to me and ask if I'm on my own
I answer "Why?" and she said, "That girl over there wants to know"
A couple rum runners later and it was just me and you
We said we won't tell nobody, but baby, everyone knew 'bout

-

Them hotel sheets wе were under
Couldn't tеll you which room or number
All I know is I was fallin' in deeper
And that door said, "Do Not Disturb"
Yeah you hit me like a heat wave
We stayed up all night all day
Waves crashin' outside like thunder
Your body on mine like a sunburn
Your body on mine like a sunburn

-

Yeah, I told you I liked you, you said, "Boy, ain't no way"
Said, "Girl, I know you're right, but I meant it anyway"
We were just ridin' the breeze until the sunrise, yeah
And for a couple of nights, you were all mine in

-

Them hotel sheets we were under
Couldn't tell you which room or number
All I know is I was fallin' in deeper
And that door said, "Do Not Disturb"
Yeah, you hit me like a heat wave
We stayed up all night all day
Waves crashin' outside like thunder
Your body on mine like a sunburn
Your body on mine like a sunburn

-

It's like we had our own island
My heart felt like it was flyin'
I couldn't tell you goodbye yet
Wish I could go back and dive in

-

Them hotel sheets we were under
Couldn't tell you which room or number
All I know is I was fallin' in deeper
And that door said, "Do Not Disturb"
Yeah, you hit me like a heat wave
We stayed up all night all day
Waves crashin' outside like thunder
Your body on mine like a sunburn
Your body on mine like a sunburn"
