The Background:
Summer just doesn’t seem quite right without some Alan Jackson on the playlist, and this year we’ve been treated to a brand new track to add to the 2026 soundtrack.
Whilst the country legend might be retiring from touring, his final show set for June 27 at Nissan Stadium, it doesn’t seem like he’s stopping with new music just yet - this track in particular has a very sweet story to it.
Taking to social media, it was announced that Jackson’s cover of the 1976 hit written by Johanna and John Hall, ‘Still The One’, would be released on June 25. Accompanying the post was a collage of photographs from the ‘Chattahoochee’ singer’s long, love-filled life with his wife, Denise.
In honour of the couple’s fateful meeting 50 years ago at high school, Jackson recorded the song he associated with the high-school sweethearts meeting:
“50 years ago in 1976, in Newnan, Georgia, I started dating this young girl. She was a cheerleader for Newnan High School… she was practicing her dance routine for the cheerleeding squad and the football game to a hit song that was a hit that summer called ‘Still The One’."
"Three years later, I ended up marrying that young girl. She’s my wife today Denise. So in honor of the 50 years, I went into the studio and recorded that little pop song with some country seasoning, and I gave it to her for her birthday, ’cause she’s still the one.”
A story as sweet as sugar, and a cover as good as any classic Alan Jackson track - ‘Still The One’ might just be the song of the summer.
The Sound:
We all know what to expect from an Alan Jackson single, and ‘Still The One’ both fills and exceeds expectations, even as a cover. Taking the original pop song and “countryfying” it, the track is full to the brim of steel guitar, fiddle and the twang of a guitar.
Kicking off with an “alright, this was released in 1976!”Jackson pays homage to the song's roots alongside a lively fiddle setting the scene. The chorus comes in with steel guitar bends and its catchy hook, before more fiddle and vocal harmonies in the second verse take the track up another notch.
All throughout the track, the percussion pushes it forward before a classic fiery guitar break takes us into the neotraditional realm we know and love.
The Meaning:
‘We've been together since way back when
Sometimes I never want to see you again
But I want you to know, after all these years
You're still the one I want whisperin' in my ear’
If we weren’t sure, then it’s immediately made clear that this track is directed towards the one person who’s seen Jackson through every part of his life - his partner of 50 years, Denise. As with all relationships, there are ups and downs, but even after so many years, there’s only one person the ‘Livin’ On Love’ singer wants to come home to.
‘You're still the one I want to talk to in bed
Still the one that turns my head
We're still havin' fun and you're still the one’
First thing in the morning and final thing at night, all Jackson wants is to have his wife there to talk to in bed - that one person that you can never run out of things to tell. And even after a remarkable career and an even more remarkable life, the country legend is still having most fun with his wife.
‘I looked at your face every day
But I never saw it till I went away
When winter came, I just wanted to go (Wanted to go)
Deep in the desert, longin' for that snow
You're still the one that makes me laugh
Still the one that's my better half
We're still havin' fun and you're still the one’
It’s a fitting track for someone who has spent a significant part of their life away from home, always on the road. Sometimes you don’t realise quite how much you treasure something - or someone - until it’s just out of reach. When they’re not with you, you just feel like something isn’t quite right - like longing for snow in the desert.
‘Changin', our love is goin' gold
And even though we're old, it grows new’
With gold being the marker of a 50th anniversary, their love really is “goin’ gold” - and even after all this time, it’s still growing day by day. Now that’s a love story to long for.
