‘Sorry... I Meant Tonight’ by Megan Moroney – Lyrics & Meaning

The week after dropping her celebrated third studio album, Cloud 9, Megan Moroney surprised fans by tagging on a special bonus track, ‘Sorry... I Meant Tonight’. It serves as a sibling song of sorts to ‘Nothin’ Crazy’ from Moroney's Lucky era, with the track pivoting around a protagonist who gets caught up in a whirlwind romance.

Moroney later shared via social media that ‘Sorry... I Meant Tonight’ was one of the first songs she sent to Ed Sheeran when they were talking about recording a collaboration. Ultimately, though, Ed opted for the more traditional-leaning ’I Only Miss You’.

‘Sorry... I Meant Tonight’ combines Moroney's classic country wit and charm with a more ‘80s-infused, dance-pop aesthetic. Her sleek vocals glide across a bright, polished and synth-driven instrumental, making this a certified, floor-filling earworm. It showcases Moroney's ability to flit between old-school country - epitomised by ‘I Only Miss You’ - and a contemporary sound, such as on ’Wish I Didn't’.

Throughout ‘Sorry... I Meant Tonight’, Moroney playfully steps into the shoes of a lover who is getting entangled in the fantasy of spending her life with a man she's only just met. She reels off a lengthy list of potential dates, such as flying to Vegas, heading to the West Coast or taking a trip to Miami. Our narrator then blurts out “What are you doing for the rest of your life?”, because she knows she wants to spend it with him, before hilariously backtracking and covering, “Sorry...I meant tonight”.

When announcing the unexpected drop, the Georgia native described ‘Sorry... I Meant Tonight’ as the “older sister” to ‘Nothin’ Crazy’, her 2023 collaboration with Mackenzie Carpenter. Both songs follow lead characters who get swept away by whirlwind romances.

In a separate post, Moroney explained that she'd initially sent ‘Sorry... I Meant Tonight’ to Ed Sheeran, before the British chart-topper settled on ‘I Only Miss You’ for their duet instead.

Moroney revealed, “its one of the first songs i sent to ed to see if he liked it at all for us to sing together...he obviously loveddd i only miss you which i think was def the move”.

The ‘Wish I Didn't’ hitmaker went on, “but i couldn't get it out of my head so i decided to write the second verse & record it by myself & its soooo nothing crazy's older sister coded...a dance party finish for the cloud 9 album...hope u love it i loveee u”.
