The Background:

Wyatt Flores has steadily grown his artistic identity to become known for his moving, emotional and raw tracks. His new single, ‘Scared of Heights’, is the latest addition to that catalogue.

The title-track from his upcoming album was released on Friday, July 10th 2026 and follows the previous single, ‘Half The Man’. The track discusses his personal anxiety in relationships, one that doesn't come from fearing what he could achieve, but rather from what he could lose.

Although his sound was largely built on his red-dirt Oklahoman roots, Flores has always been one to mix genres rather than see the distinct lines separating them. Talking about the upcoming album he explained “I know that I chose to do something different because I am different…it’s just taken some time to remember that’s what makes me, me.”

Taking to social media to announce the release of the track, Flores wrote: “My fear of letting others down is something I’ve struggled with most of my life. Being scared to take the jump was a lot easier when I had nothing to lose and everything to gain”.

The Stillwater native has openly struggled with his mental health throughout his career, and as many of the most honest songwriters do, he’s placed those struggles and experiences in his music.

The ‘Running on E’ singer has explained that his upcoming album firmly sits in the early 2000s angst-rock sound whilst still relying on his passion for moving songwriting. Through using a sound that resonates with him, Flores has been able to create a body of work that both reflects on his upbringing whilst navigating the unpredictability of the last few years of his developing career. “These are my songs. This is the happiest I’ve ever been with an album, and I just have to stand on it. There’s been a lot of growth between Welcome To The Plains and Scared of Heights.”

Scared of Heights is set for release on July 31th, and based on the singles so far, it’s bound to be one of Flores’ most impressive projects so far.

The Sound:

Following his ambition for exploring different sounds, ‘Scared of Heights’ kicks off with some vocal harmonies and an electric guitar creeping into the background. The track remains mellow throughout, the reserved nature of the instruments reflecting Flores’ anxiety.

Gentle, rolling drums are mostly saved for an emotional bridge where the track develops a step-by-step melody. This is a further shift away from the country sound Flores was known for, sitting closer to a predominantly soft-rock sound; in his own words though, “Everyone’s going to put it as country because that’s who I am, but I’ve tried since the beginning to never have two songs sound the same. Life’s too short to be boxed in”.

The Meaning:

As the song begins, it seems as if Flores is having a difficult conversation within a romantic relationship. He wishes that they could just stay in one place, somewhere where things are easy. Flores knows that there’s a whole world outside that can make his anxiety spiral, and he doesn't want to have to acknowledge it. Although knowing that it would end things in tears, he sings that “if you ask what we are I ain’t gonna lie, I’ll leave your side” - for someone who lives on the road, he won’t be in one place for too long.

In the emotional chorus, the Oklahoman songwriter explains that he’s not scared of the “big” things in life, whether that be in his career, with family or - as he sings here - in romantic relationships, it’s the possibility of ruining those good things for himself. A self-destructive nature can make things turn bad, no matter how promising they are and there’s not much you can do to stop it. The result, preventing people from getting too close and turning lovers into strangers.

“Can we stay here in this place
Before I find a reason not to walk away?
Before the tears are rolling, falling off your face
If you ask what we are, ain't gonna lie
I'll leave your side
-
I'm not scared of heights
Baby, I, I'm just scared of falling
I'm not scared of heights
Baby, I, I'm just scared of falling
-
So please don't get too close
It's when I close the door, don't wanna fuck it up
Like every girl before, soon as you say we're something
We won't be nothing anymore
Just strangers like before
-
I'm not scared of heights
Baby, I, I'm just scared of falling
I'ma drop the ball
I'll wreck it all before I'm going all in
-
So if you hold me through the night
Can you not give me "don't leave" eyes?
I'll run and hide if you ask why
I'm just scared of falling
-
I'm not scared of heights
Baby, I, I'm just scared of falling
I'ma drop the ball
I'll wreck it all before I'm going all in
-
I'm just scared of falling”
