The Background
Country music’s Stella Lefty and Bailey Zimmerman announced their collaboration earlier this month, with the rest of the featured artists on the soundtrack for Netflix's Nobody Wants This: Season 3.
‘My Kinda Love’ has some high profile song writers behind it. Alongside Lefty and Zimmerman, the track was penned by Joe Reeves and Jacob Kasher Hindlin who have both worked with Lefty before and ROMANS who has worked with huge names like Lewis Capaldi and Ed Sheeran. The song explores what it takes to love someone and what we're willing to accept as a demonstration of that.
The Sound
‘My Kinda Love’ sways to an easy beat laced with pedal steel throughout. It’s a vulnerable track without over production, relying on Lefty and Zimmerman’s vocals to deliver on the emotion. And boy, do they. An electric guitar breakdown gives a romantic mid-point to the song, as well as the banjo and steel, giving this track some bluesy country roots.
The Meaning
Lefty and Zimmerman lilt over what they expect from their greatest love. Rejecting empty gifts and copy and paste sentiments, the pair declare what they’re willing to expect in return for being their truest, most vulnerable self.
Listing examples of dramatic demonstrations of love, Lefty and Zimmerman ask if their partner would ‘jump in front of a freight train’ or ‘save me from a bullet’ - you know, give their life for theirs.
But the clincher is the line, ‘do I mean enough to leave your pride in the dust’. They’re likening the death-defying stunts to losing their pride and loving them anyway. They’re saying, ‘leave your ego at the door and love me with everything you’ve got’ and that, to them, is the same as giving them their life.
And why is the buy-in so high? Because they’ve been burned. They’ve been their truest, most vulnerable self and it’s got them nowhere. They accepted less than enough and were left down and out. So they’ve raised the stakes. If their partner wants to be in the game, they need to understand the rules.

“I'm not impressed with
Flowers and a cute little necklace
Won't be another name on your hit list
Gotta be someone you're obsessed with
If you want my life
And you want the rest of my nights
Baby, show me
What you're gonna do 'cause talk is cheap
Won't you lay it on the line for me?
We can't waste time anymore
-
So tell me, would you jump in front of a freight train
And save me from a bullet going my way?
Or do I mean enough to leave your pride in the dust
And give me the world just because?
Yeah, that's my kinda love
-
Yeah, that's my kinda love
That's my kinda love, mm
-
I give my all, and all I ever get left with
Is my heart kicked deep down in the dirt
I get so tired of being lonely, being the only
One who knows what I deserve
If I break down my walls
And I show you every part of me
I need to know when the weather gets rough
When we're down on our luck
You won't just get up and leave
You might also like
-
So tell me, would you jump in front of a freight train
And save me from a bullet going my way?
Or do I mean enough to leave your pride in the dust
And give me the world just because?
Yeah, that's my kinda love
-
My kinda love
-
Tell me, would you jump in front of a freight train
And save me from a bullet going my way?
Or do I mean enough to leave your pride in the dust
I swear I ain't asking for much
Just wanna know you'd lay on a landmine
And hold me until your heart flatlines
Oh, do I mean enough to leave your pride in the dust
And give me the world just because?
Yeah, that's my kind of love
-
Yeah, that's my kind of love
The kind that never wants to give up
Oh
It's my kinda, my kinda, my kinda love”
