The title-track from Phoebe Bridgers’ eagerly anticipated 2026 album, ‘Lost Weekend’ was undoubtedly one of the most talked-about songs from the project upon its release on Friday, August 14th. Aside from being a cornerstone of the record thematically, the lyric “I'm supposed to be married, but I called it off” inevitably sparked intrigue from fans, who have speculated this is about Paul Mescal.

Bridgers dated Mescal from 2020 to 2022, with there being widespread rumours at the time that they were engaged. This lyric is interpreted as confirmation of that.

Now, of course, Bridgers is with fellow artist and comedian Bo Burnham, who is a co-writer on ‘Lost Weekend’. The song seemingly follows Bridgers’ evolution from being an up-and-coming artist happily playing for ‘no one’, to calling off the engagement with Mescal, to then finding love with Burnham. The “glow in the dark” line could be a nod to Burnham's Inside musical-comedy, in which he appears as a ‘glow-in-the-dark’ figure. Ethan Gruska and Tony Berg are also co-writers on this song.

‘Lost Weekend’ showcases Bridgers’ rich, visceral penchant for pushing the boundaries of folk, pop, country and alternative genres, with the track featuring the boygenius band-member's signature vocal layering. Much of the song features Bridgers singing alongside a haunting, ominous organ, with synths drifting in and out.

It creates the feeling of being in an enchanted, mysterious reverie, with Bridgers recounting the events in the narrative as though they were a strange, distant dream. Towards the latter half of ‘Lost Weekend’, the instrumental builds out into a dramatic, rousing crescendo, cementing the idea that this song is the bridge between Side A and Side B, and the cornerstone of the album as a whole.

The title ‘Lost Weekend’ is seemingly a nod to both Charles R. Jackson's 1944 novel about a writer who embarks on an alcoholic binge, as well as being the phrase John Lennon used to describe the 18-month period he and Yoko Ono spent apart. He referred to that stint as his ‘Lost Weekend’ because of all the drinking and partying, as well as the feeling of having lost out on precious time with his partner.

Bridgers has cited Lennon as a key influence throughout her career, and the lyric “Surviving my gift until I get shot” is likely a reference to Lennon's death in December 1980.

In a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone, Bridgers underlined her longstanding admiration for Lennon, citing him as, “Easily [the] best Beatle”, adding, “He’s been such an icon for so many people who are my heroes, like Elliott Smith and Daniel Johnston”.

Bridgers’ own ‘Lost Weekend’ has been interpreted as her description of the period between the creation of her last solo album, 2020's Punisher, and 2026's Lost Weekend. As well as referencing the artistic upheaval she experienced as she focussed more on boygenius, it could also be a nod to the media speculation and online furore surrounding her relationship with Mescal and then Burnham.

‘Lost Weekend’ isn't the only song on the new album where Bridgers references this, with many fans believing her line in ‘The Governor's Waltz’ - where she sings “And she can pretend to be me / Since she took my place in my bed on that stage” - to be a thinly veiled dig at Mescal's current partner and Bridgers’ old friend, Gracie Abrams. Abrams famously bought the same ‘rocket’ bed-sheets as Bridgers in 2017, and then used them on-stage for the recreation of her bed.

Much of the narrative on ‘Lost Weekend’ arrives in fragments, adding to its dream-like feel, with the track broadly exploring a sense of betrayal as Bridgers addresses an old flame.
