The Background:
On Riley Green's fourth studio album, That's Just Me, he teams up with an array of his idols, including Randy Owen from Alabama, Brooks & Dunn and even - posthumously - Toby Keith. On ‘Lookout Mountain’, he joins forces with Owen. It's part-heartbreak song, part-love letter to one of the most distinctive Alabama landscapes.
The Sound:
The composition is kept pared-down and drawn-in throughout ‘Lookout Mountain’, mirroring the resignation our protagonist feels as he watches his lover drive off into the sunset. There is some banjo and steel in the mix, giving this a subtle bluegrass feel, a tip of the cap to the classic sound of Randy Owen's Alabama. Owen's unmistakable vocals enter the fray towards the end of the song, with ‘Lookout Mountain’ following a similar structure to ‘Pave All Them Red Dirt Roads’ with Brooks & Dunn and ‘Think As You Drunk’ with the late Toby Keith.
The Meaning:
The curtain opens on our protagonist being left by his partner on the top of Lookout Mountain, a sprawling mountain range that crosses Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. As he watches her go, he cleverly transitions from singing ‘Lookout Mountain’ to ‘Look out whiskey’ and ‘Look out lonely’ - because he's coming their way.
This song is peppered with little references to specific locations, such as Nickajack Dam and Monteagle, both of which are in Tennessee, giving ‘Lookout Mountain’ a decidedly local ambience. When he sings that the only way around the mountain is to go “over the edge”, you can't help but feel he's not just talking about geography, as he hints that this heartbreak might have tipped him ‘over the edge’ emotionally.
