The Background

Lainey Wilson continued her hot streak of singles in 2026 by following up the playful ‘Phone, Keys, Wallet’ with the loved-up ‘Kinda Love It’. Much like ‘Phone, Keys, Wallet’, John Mayer is credited as a co-writer on this uptempo, feel-good earworm.

Wilson accompanied ‘Kinda Love It’ with a heartwarming music video featuring her husband Devlin ‘Duck’ Hodges. ‘Kinda Love It’ is expected to feature on Wilson's sixth album.

The Sound

‘Kinda Love It’ finds Wilson exploring a vibrant new sound, with the layered vocal style helping to give the hook a euphoric, carefree feel, mirroring the tone of the narrative.

The energising instrumental combines with Wilson's charismatic, twang-infused delivery, with ‘Kinda Love It’ showcasing her willingness to experiment. ‘Kinda Love It’ feels like one of Wilson's most eye-catching, refreshing releases in recent months.

The Meaning

Throughout ‘Kinda Love It’, Wilson light-heartedly quips that she's always said she would never go for a gun-slinging, smoke-blowing ‘bad boy’ - but her heart had other ideas.

Judging by the video, it feels loosely inspired by Wilson's romance with Duck, but less in the sense of him being an outlaw, and more in the sense of her being enamoured.

After outlining how she never thought this would be the kind of guy she'd go for, our narrator shrugs her shoulders and admits that she can't help it - she's fallen hard for this wild child. She goes as far as saying that, if he calls her from jail, she'd be there first thing with his bail money and a lift home, stressing that there's no turning back.

This ties in with the opening lines of the hook, which feels like the cornerstone: “I got a tiger by the tail”. This phrase is used to mean you're in a situation where to continue is highly dangerous, but letting go is equally as perilous. The protagonist emphasises that, while there's a risk of heartbreak, she loves the thrill of this relationship.

“Na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na
Na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na
Na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na
Na-na

-

I know them outlaws, they get a bad name
The ones that blow smoke, the ones that gun sling
Dang, I done found me one, I wasn't huntin'
And I kinda love it
He's a bad boy without a bad bone
Kinda like a desperado in that one song
I'd be his one call from the jail phone
I'd be there in the morning with the money and a way home

-

I got a tiger by the tail
If it goes to hell, oh well
And if it kills me, no, I ain't above it
Yeah, I hate to say it, but man, I kinda love it
I got a place to keep his boots
If he ever puts down roots
I said I wouldn't, but damn, I went and done it
Yeah, I hate to say it, but man, I kinda love it

-

He's a wild card in a stacked deck
He's some rough hands around a longneck
Never can tell what he'll say next
One card shy of a runaway train wreck

-

Na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na
Na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na
I kinda love it
Yeah, I kinda love it
Na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na
Oh, oh

-

My head's saying no, my heart's telling me to gun it, yeah
I hate to say it, but, I hate to say it, but
My head's saying no, my heart's telling me to gun it, yeah
I hate to say it, but, I hate to say it, but
My head's saying no, my heart's telling me to gun it, yeah
I hate to say it, but, I hate to say it, but
My head's saying no, my heart's telling me to gun it, yeah
I hate to say it, but man, I kinda love it

-

I got a tiger by the tail
If it goes to hell, oh well
And if it kills me, no, I ain't above it
Yeah, I hate to say it, but man, I kinda love it
I got a nail to hang his hat
If I'm where his home is at
I said I wouldn't, but damn, I went and done it
Yeah, I hate to say it, but man, I kinda love it

-

Na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na
Na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na
I kinda love it
Oh, I kinda love it
Na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na
Oh, oh, yeah
Na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na
Na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na
Na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na
Na-na
Yeah, I kinda love it”
