The Background:

On Friday, July 31st, Riley Green treated us to another sneak preview of his fourth studio album, That's Just Me, when he released the fourth single from the project, ‘Imagine That’.

The song finds Green calling up an old flame late at night and attempting to convince her to give him a second chance, with the Alabama native painting a rose-tinted picture of how their evening could go if she just takes the plunge and says, ‘Yes’. Green teased this one in April 2026, with fans clamouring for a release ever since.

The Sound:

‘Imagine That’ features the relatively low-key, understated compositions that Green has become synonymous with over the years. His laid-back drawl glides across a bed of warm, cushioning guitars as he gently serenades his ex over the telephone.

The Meaning:

In ‘Imagine That’, the curtain opens on a forlorn protagonist who has called up his old flame as a late-night, last-chance-saloon attempt to win her back after messing up their relationship. He admits his surprise at the fact that she even picks up, and he outlines that he knows she must be a little confused as to what he wants from her.

Then, he proceeds to admit he longs to have her back in his arms, and he quickly pre-empts her initial response by asking her to give him a few minutes before making up her mind. Then, he regales her with an idyllic scene of him waiting outside her window with his trusty old truck, before taking her out on a sweet countryside date.

He asks her to “imagine that”, before expressing his hope that she decides to join him on this midnight adventure, and give our narrator one more chance to make things right.

“Damn, I can't believe that you picked up the phone
This late at night, I bet you're wonderin' what the hell I want
I just called to let you know that you're the only always on my mind
See if there's a chance in hell that you'd see me tonight
Before you make up your mind

Imagine there's a four-wheel-drive
Waitin' right outside
It's ready to drive a thousand miles
Or just ride around a while
And imagine there's a full moon
Shinin' on a poor ol' fool
Just ready to make things right
Even if it takes all night
And that ol' boy's just dyin' to get you back
Imagine that
-
Imagine he's sorry and missin' you
And cussin' that wasted time on
The things he did and he didn't do
Hell, he's barely gettin' by
Can't you just close your eyes
-
And imagine there's a four-wheel-drive
Waitin' right outside
It's ready to drive a thousand miles
Or just ride around a while
And imagine there's a full moon
Shinin' on a poor ol' fool
Who's ready to make things right
Even if it takes all night
And that ol' boy's just dyin' to get you back
Yeah, imagine that
-
Can you imagine that?
-
Yeah, just look out that window in your livin' room
And you'll see me and right then you won't have to
-
Imagine there's a four-wheel-drive
Waitin' right outside
It's ready to drive a thousand miles
Or just ride around a while
And imagine there's a full moon
Shinin' on a poor ol' fool
Who's ready to make things right
Even if it takes all night
And that ol' boy's just dyin' to get you back
Yeah, imagine that
-
Can you imagine that?”
