The Background:
Appearing on Riley Green's 2026 studio album, That's Just Me, ‘Got That From You’ finds the ‘Worst Way’ singer-songwriter reflecting on all the lingering scars - both physical and emotional - that he has leftover from a particularly painful break-up.
Co-written by Green with two of his go-to collaborators, Rhett Akins, Erik Dylan and Nick Walsh, ‘Got That From You’ is one of the many heartbreak anthems on That's Just Me.
The Sound:
Despite the despairing, crestfallen message of the narrative, ‘Got That From You’ carries a light, breezy ambience courtesy of the bright guitar riff and Green's laid-back vocals.
It conveys the feeling that, although he carries around a lot of emotional baggage from the break-up, he's made his peace with the fact that his ex will forever be a part of him.
The Meaning:
Over the course of ‘Got That From You’, Green rattles through a list of reminders he still has of a break-up. These range from direct to indirect consequences of the split, from the feeling that even a sunny, blue-sky day is just a bleak shade of grey to the whiskey and coke he's currently trying to drown his sorrows in.
He reels off numerous cause-and-effects that weren't to do with the break-up, such as the scar on his left cheek that he got from a bar-fight, a dent in his Chevy from making a bad turn and various habits he got from his old man. But as for the broken heart that he does his best to conceal, well, there's no doubt that he got that from. There's a lovely piece of Western-inspried imagery where Green describes how he attempts to hide his broken heart with his peal-snap, button-down shirt.

“This here scar on my left cheek
Comes from some old boy's right hook
That dented door in the Chevy
From a turn I shouldn't have took
I've got a couple bad tattoos
I got down in Cancun
Woke up wearing nothing but my boots
-
But this here
Broken heart I keep Pearl Snap hidden
This Coca-Cola I keep pourin' whiskey in
This barstool goodbye bad dream come true
This shade of gray sky blue, I got that from you
I got that from you
-
This Copenhagen in my lip
I picked up from my old man
Ain't the only habit he gave me
Still drinkin' beer in a can
I found out what heaven is
That red wine on your lips
Out there on a front porch swing
-
But this here
Broken heart I keep Pearl Snap hidden
This Coca-Cola I keep pourin' whiskey in
This barstool goodbye bad dream come true
This shade of gray sky blue, I got that from you
I got that from you
-
Back then I thought I was tough
'Til you tore out and left a cloud of dust
-
This broken heart I keep Pearl Snap hidden
This Coca-Cola I keep on pourin' whiskey in
This barstool goodbye bad dream come true
This shade of gray sky blue
I got that from you
I got that from you
-
Yeah, I got that from you”
