The Background:
Riley Green and Hannah McFarland have been touring together for two years and have become accustomed to an emotional duet. McFarland regularly joins Green on stage for ‘Don’t Mind If I Do’, which carries its own sentimentality, but was originally recorded with Ella Langley.
They came together for their own duet 'I Just Need You' on Green's album, Don't Mind If I Do (Deluxe) and now, the duo have poured their hearts into a personal ode to life on the road. ‘Go Again’, which Green first teased via socials back in September 2024, carries the vulnerability of two hearts that don’t have time to fall in love.
The Sound:
Reminiscent of Green’s ‘Bartender in Destin’, the track’s bluesy guitars are laced with subtle steel and Green’s sultry southern drawl. McFarland adds her point of view in the second verse, her vocals perfectly complementing the ache of the song as it builds to the slightly heavier second chorus.
The Meaning:
We’re led to believe that it starts with a hangover, but we all know that the hangover is never where it starts. As Green croons, “You didn’t sleep a wink last night but girl you still look perfect,” it is abundantly clear that this all began the night before. A little wine, a little late night conversation and now a little longer to say goodbye.
When the realities of tomorrow quickly infringe on today, Green and McFarland are torn between basking in their rose-tinted bubbles for a moment more, or continuing with their outside lives. “We Can Go Again” is the alternative option to getting on the plane, climbing aboard the bus and making half-hearted plans to meet up again soon. Their hunger for each other is dressed down, veiled in ‘we could’ and ‘we don’t have to’, but as they “lay here while we decide”, the outcome is ultimately the same. The rest of the world awaits and their commitments are real.
But they could just go again.

“Last night’s red wine has my head hurting
You didn’t sleep a wink all night but somehow girl you still look perfect
And I guess we knew that you’d be leaving
But one night with you ain’t near enough
For what I’m needing, so
-
You can climb in that cab and catch that flight back to LA
We can shut the blinds, shut out the world
Lay in this damn bed all day
We can both pretend we’ll meet up again when you pass through
Or you can leave me a memory, it can be the end
Or we can go again
We can go again
-
Boy we were hell on this hotel
You made me laugh fumbling with my dress tripping over your damn boots
This show’s in town for one night only
I’ve got a plane to catch but my heart keeps telling me don’t leave
-
You can climb on that bus and catch that ride back to Tennessee
Or you can kick them boots back off, climb in this bed and just hold on me
We can both pretend to meet up again when you pass through
Or you can leave me a memory, it can be the end
Or we can go again
Yeah we can go again
-
We don’t have to make plans, baby we don’t have to lie
We can let it all end here tonight
But baby let’s just lay here while we decide
‘Cos I’d sure love to love you one more time
-
I can climb on that bus and catch that ride back to Tennessee
Or you can kick them boots back off, climb in this bed and just hold on me
We can both pretend we’ll meet up again when you pass through
Or you can leave me a memory, it can be the end
Or we can go again
Yeah we can go again”
