The Background

Pictures of You is the debut album from Montana duo, Frankie Cassidy and Nathan Ross, the duo that front the band, Buffalo Traffic Jam.

Having been on tour with Dylan Gossett in late 2025 and throughout 2026, their breakout single ‘Fools Gold’ went viral. At the time of writing, it has over 118 million streams on Spotify and features on their first album, Pictures of You.

In an interview with People, Cassidy shared the story behind the song. “I was home alone at our house for about a week and just getting really lonely…Really, at the end of the day, it’s fool’s gold — thinking, ‘Oh, I’m so alone, and I need some people back in my life right now,’ rather than accepting there are internal struggles you need to fix before doing that.”

The Sound

Cassidy’s raspy vocals are the focus of the track, with acoustic guitars jamming in the background, before a mid track breakdown that ups the ante. Mandolin, bass and cello complete the track as the heartbeat of acoustic guitar returns to see it out.

The sound is akin to a Zach Bryan/Max McNown/Noah Kahan mash up. It's got the heavy guitar strum, the gravelly voice and introspective lyrics.

The Meaning

‘Fools Gold’ is a moment for the vulnerability in loneliness. Cassidy writes about the temptation to fill the void with a familiar feeling, rather than acknowledge that the void is an internalised problem. Lines like "the silence ain't so kind," and "hate being left alone" mirror these feelings.

The concept of fool's gold is the deceptive value of something perceived to be of worth. Here, Cassidy croons over the desire to explore an old love that he's looking back on with rose-tinted glasses, just to avoid facing his own demons. "It's fool's gold it's got a hold" demonstrates those around him trying to prevent the impending pain when the relationship breaks down again.

The pace of the song signifies desperation and frustration, which is also echoed in the chorus, "love is kind, love's not fair" and lines like "we don't have much time". Conscious of wasting life, Cassidy is increasingly more determined to find company, possibly with a relationship that ended out of his control, while the silence he fears creeps louder and louder.

"What do you say we leave tonight
We could leave it all behind
22 and wasting time
No, the silence ain't so kind
Hate being left alone
It reminds me no one's home
Rain is dancing on the roof
With these sober thoughts of you
-
Lovers talk late at night
Doing drugs to ease my mind
I'm not alright
You were there, now you're gone
Never thought you were wrong
We don't have much time
-
And they said, "Oh, no, don't go
I've been here before"
And she said, "Boy, won't you think twice?
You can't do no more"
But I know how this stories told
Bottled up my fear
And they said, "It's fool's gold it's got a hold"
I'm dying here
-
Lovers talk late at night
Doing drugs to ease my mind
I'm not alright
You were there, now you're gone
Never thought you were wrong
We don't have much time
-
Love is kind, love's not fair
Not your choice if you care
I'm down on hope
I can't do nothing right
Thought that I could make you mine
I tried and tried
-
Lovers talk late at night
Doing drugs to ease my mind
Well I'm not alright
You were there, now you're gone
Never thought you were wrong
We don't have much time
-
Love is kind, love's not fair
Not your choice if you care
I'm down on hope
I can't do nothing right
Thought that I could make you mine
I tried and tried
-
Lovers talk late at night
Doing drugs to ease my mind
I'm not alright
You were there, now you're gone
Never thought you were wrong
We don't have much time
We don't have much time"
