The Background:

Given how Riley Green's popularity had exploded after the steamy ‘Worst Way’, despite not previously being a fan of writing love-songs, listeners were curious to see whether he leaned into this heartthrob persona on his 2026 studio album, That's Just Me.

He makes it clear early in the album on Track No. 3, ‘Don't Come Any Closer’, that he's catering for his romantics as well as fans of his earlier, camo-adorned, duck-hunting aesthetic.

The Sound:

The sultry, electric-guitar-fuelled composition of ‘Don't Come Any Closer’ mirrors the sensual, yearning ambience of the narrative. Green laces an extra sense of emotion into his delivery as he pretends that he doesn't want the girl to fall back into his arms.

The Meaning:

‘Don't Come Any Closer’ begins with the classic police warning to “keep your hands right where I can see them”, with Green making it clear that it's best for both of them if they don't get too close, such is the intensity of their chemistry and attraction.

By framing this as both a warning and a plea, it accentuates how, once they start falling for one another, they can't help but return to the place they were when they were together.

But our protagonist's repeated advisories suggest that they always end up imploding eventually. Even so, it's evident throughout that they're simply unable to resist each other.

“Girl, keep your hands right where I can see ‘em

Don’t move a muscle don’t say a thing

Whatever you do girl don’t lean in any closer

We better keep some distance in between

-

Unless you wanna give one last time another try again

Unless you want to make mine the bed you’re climbing in

If we end up back in those sheets you ain’t gonna put the blame on me

Unless you wanna fall in love all over

Don’t come any closer

-

Take one more step and I’ll smell your perfume

And if you pour that wine I’m gonna want a glass

That hallway always leads to that bedroom

I’ve seen let’s take it slow, yeah, start movin’ pretty damn fast

-

Unless you wanna give one last time another try again

Unless you want to make mine the bed you’re climbing in

If we end up back those sheets you ain’t gonna put the blame on me

Unless you wanna fall in love all over

Don’t come any closer

Don’t come any closer

-

If you wake up wearing my T-shirt in the morning

You can’t say I didn’t warn ya

-

Unless you wanna give one last time another try again

Unless you want to make mine the bed you’re climbing in

Cause, if we end up back in those sheets you ain’t gonna put the blame on me

Unless you wanna fall in love all over

Well, don’t come any closer

Don’t come any closer

Don’t come any closer”
