The Background:

One of the most buzzed-about gems from Alex Warren's 2026 album, WILDCHILD, ‘CRY WOLF’ finds the ‘Ordinary’ hitmaker chastising an old flame for asking him for grace.

Warren teased the track a couple of weeks before the album's release, with ’CRY WOLF’ already cementing itself as an early fan-favourite from the project. The track was penned by Warren with his core co-writing team of Adam Yaron, Mags Duval and CAL.

The Sound:

‘CRY WOLF’ is a marked departure from the sweet, pared-down, pop-driven sound behind Warren's break-out hit, ‘Ordinary’, with this fierce earworm exploring a much darker, much more ominous ambience. Across ‘CRY WOLF’, Warren laces venom into his vocals, as he addresses his old tormentor directly across and guitar-fuelled instrumental. The addition of the choral voices in the hook accentuates the gravitas and drama of the track, giving ‘CRY WOLF’ the feel of an empowering, ‘You-don't-control-me-anymore’ anthem rather than a vulnerable lament.

The Meaning:

‘CRY WOLF’ revolves around an ex that comes to the protagonist and asks them for forgiveness. He uses Biblical imagery to convey just how severely this person hurt him in the past, bluntly declaring, “The devil don't knock at your door / When you got no soul to sell / Why would I try to ruin your life when you're doing it by yourself?

As the narrator repeatedly outlines across this fiery anthem, he's been burned too many times before, likening them to ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’. Just as in that tale, nobody believes the boy's pleas for help because he's lied so consistently before, the protagonist here says no-one will have sympathy for his former partner.

The narrator paints a visceral picture of the complicated relationship between revenge and forgiveness, hinting that he doesn't want to exact revenge, but that he also can't forgive what they've done to him. He stresses that their wrongs will soon be revealed without his help, “What you've done in the dark / Gonna see the light of day / Ain't no sense seeking revenge / I don't wanna have to dig two graves”.

He sagely reflects that, if he starts trying to fight his old flame's accusations and lies with equal force, he will end up harming himself in the process - and they're just not worth it.

“The devil don't knock at your door
When you got no soul to sell
Why would I try to ruin your life when you're doing it by yourself?
There ain't no water to drink
When you're poisoning the well
Tears run dry, nobody gon' buy that empty cry for help
-
When I hear your name
It starts a fire in my veins
When I gave you grace
You threw it right back in my face
So don't come crying to me, I won't
Lose anymore sleep, I know
You're spinning your lies
Only so many times you can cry wolf
-
What you've done in the dark
Gonna see the light of day
Ain't no sense seeking revenge
I don't wanna have to dig two graves
-
When I hear your name
It starts a fire in my veins
When I gave you grace
You threw it right back in my face
So don't come crying to me, I won't
Lose anymore sleep, I know
You're spinning your lies
Only so many times you can cry wolf
-
You were on the phone, said you were alone
Whispers in the dark, now your covers blown
Let you set me up, just to watch me fall
Knew it was a trap, why'd I take the call?
Played the victim when you're not in control
Said you love me, I know you fucking don't
I was there for you, tell me, where were you
When I needed you most?
-
Don't come crying to me
I won't
Lose anymore sleep
I know
You're spinning your lies
Oh
-
When I hear your name
It starts a fire in my veins
When I gave you grace
You threw it right back in my face
So don't come crying to me, I won't
Lose anymore sleep, I know
You're spinning your lies
Only so many times you can cry
Only so many times you can cry wolf”
