The Background:
Kane Brown’s new album is becoming somewhat elusive. It was supposed to be with us this Summer, but as we enter Fall, we are still empty handed. That being said, we can forgive the ‘Gorgeous’ singer because Brown has delivered an iconic reimagining of Shania Twain’s legendary ‘Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under’.
Brown has been relatively quiet about the track, with no teasers on his social media. We first heard that the project was in motion during his chat with Elaina Smith on the Backstage Country Uncut podcast where he revealed his “boys version” of the hit. “You’ll know she’s there,” he said in reference to Twain’s presence on the track but at the time, had not heard her part.
The Sound:
Brown’s vocals explore a deeper sound, reminiscent of Josh Turner’s ‘Your Man’, which is relatively new for the ‘Miles On It’ crooner. Twain’s 1995 original was heavy on the fiddle and that old school classic country sound. Brown has brought this into the 21st century with a fuller band sound. It’s not too much of a departure from Brown’s most recent hit, ‘Woman’, and is complemented by Twain’s unmistakable vocals in the background.
The Meaning:
You got a little buzz on your second glass of red
Got a couple questions playin' games in your head
Girl, what you been drinkin'
That's got you overthinkin' 'bout us? Mmm
I know I come home a little late some nights
It's just a couple beers and poker with the guys
Baby, I could never
Find me someone better to love, oh no
Ain't nothin' to hide
Ain't runnin' around
It was hard not to laugh when you asked me just now
Brown brings us in just after his partner has questioned his fidelity. An allegation fuelled by red wine, Brown chalks the absurd accusation up to clouded judgement, because how could his love possibly be doubted? Ah, yes, the late nights, the smell of beer. Add in a few glasses of red and the curiosity becomes elevated enough to ask the question. But not Kane Brown. It’s just beer with the boys, babe.
(Whose bed) Yeah, whose bed my boots have been under
(Whose boots) It's just you, no, there ain't another
Girl, don't you think you're talkin' crazy?
I'm tellin' you, baby
(Your lips) Your lips are all that I'm kissin'
(I'm gone) When I'm gone, you're all that I'm missin'
Don't ever have to wonder
Yeah, whose bed my boots have been under
Absolutely no way this guy has got eyes for another. His boots are firmly under his bed at home, shared only with his one girl. Whilst calling your partner crazy while they’re heightened is not overly recommended, Brown’s pragmatic intention is to double down on the lack of playing away and focus on his love for her.
Ain't nobody hotter, honey, listen to me now (That's right)
You're the only body I'd ever lay down (Well then, yeah)
I swear on my mama, God's honest truth
Come on, darlin', you know who
Hand on the bible, there’s no doubt that Brown is all in on this relationship. He brings his partner round to trusting in them again. Whose bed? Well theirs, of course. Whose lips? Just hers. There’s no question of his promise to love her and only her.
What has Kane Brown said about ‘Boots’?
During his interview with Elaina Smith, Brown shared that this song was “the guy’s version”. He went on to say that “it’s not the same sound, it’s some of her same melodies but then a whole different thing…you’re getting a completely different new song.”
