Arriving in mid-July as a surprise release, ‘2 STEP THE ENEMY’ is widely expected to feature on Forrest Frank's eagerly anticipated 2026 album, THE JESUS GENERATION.

A collaboration between Forrest, LOST & FOUND and ZVC - with the latter also serving as a co-producer on the track - ‘2 STEP THE ENEMY’ is a playful, uptempo Country-Christian crossover. It marks the second time Forrest, who has cemented himself as a leading figure in the Contemporary Christian Music scene, has dipped his toes into country, following ‘NOTHING ELSE’ with Thomas Rhett in 2025.

Shortly after the arrival of ‘2 STEP THE ENEMY’, the song started being used to soundtrack a viral ‘Christian Dance’ trend across TikTok, giving the song an extra boost of momentum as the excitement continues to build ahead of THE JESUS GENERATION.

While ‘NOTHING ELSE’ felt more like Thomas Rhett entering Forrest's lo-fi, beachside, piano-driven world, ‘2 STEP THE ENEMY’ is a whole-hearted foray into the country sphere.

Forrest and LOST & FOUND - consisting of Micah Palacio, Olivia Mawson and Michael Benjamin Wexler - trade verses across an unashamedly old-school, fiddle-backed instrumental. Staying true to the Texas Two-Step theme of the song, the track is underpinned by a galvanising, uptempo set of drums and a toe-tapping guitar riff.

It's undoubtedly a departure from the sunny, chillwave-adjacent vibe Forrest tends to go for, but still feels largely cut from the same sonic and thematic tapestry as recent singles, such as the uplifting ‘OKAY!’ and the soulful ‘SOMEBODY PRAYED’.

‘2 STEP THE ENEMY’ pivots around a series of playful, drink-inspired wordplay, with Forrest and LOST & FOUND underlining that they don't need to rely on alcohol to get a ‘buzz’.

Our protagonist begins by admitting he's been feeling run-down and jaded of late, with the ‘enemy’ - i.e. the devil - attempting to discourage him. But he stresses that, no matter how hard the demons might try to pull him away from his path, he'll always keep his eyes, his mind and his heart fixed firmly on his love for God and Jesus.

In the infectious hook, they joyfully declare that the Holy Spirit is the only pick-me-up they need: “'Cause I won't dance with the devil / But I'll two-step the enemy / Yeah the only spirit I need / Is the Holy One / I don't need Jack from Daniels / 'Cause the spirit's living in me / And He's moving through my feet / All night long / My cup gon' run (Ooh-ooh, ooh-yeah) / Yeah, my cup gon' run (Ooh-ooh, ooh-yeah)”.

Here, Forrest and LOST & FOUND flip the notion of drinking ‘spirits’ - such as tequila or whiskey - at a country dance, and instead emphasise that “the only spirit I need / Is the Holy One”. Country music has a lengthy history of romanticising drinking alcohol, with a host of the biggest songs in the genre being about whiskey.

Similarly they use the phrase ‘to dance with the devil’ to determine that, rather than doing this, they'll ‘two-step the enemy’. It's a play on the country dance, the Texas Two-Step, with our protagonist jovially stating that he'll spin away from the devil's advances. Although the exact meaning of ‘two step the enemy’ is open for interpretation, it generally means to reject or ‘step on’ the devil and hold fast to Jesus.

There's another light-hearted riff on the idea of drinking ‘spirits’ and alcohol, with our narrator outlining, “I don't need Jack from Daniels / 'Cause the spirit's living in me”. This line is, of course, a clever play on country music's favourite whiskey brand, Jack Daniel's, subverting the idea that you need to drink this to have a good time.

The night then becomes a carefree, celebratory party, where everyone there is simply rejoicing in the Holy Spirit's presence and ‘drunk’ on their love for Jesus, rather than being inebriated and succumbing to the various temptations sent by the devil.

It's also worth highlighting the line “my cup gon’ run”, a reference to - again - the notion of eschewing the need to drink alcohol, but also to Psalm 23:5 in the Bible, which reads: “Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over”. Forrest and LOST & FOUND are saying that their cups are overflowing with gladness because of Jesus.
