When it comes to Sophia Scott's brand of fiery, empowering, country pop, everything is worn on her sleeve.
Bar Stool Confessions, her captivating 2023 debut album for EMPIRE, revelled in it's sincerity but it's determination, Scott proving to be a killer songwriter who could crush a break-up through the power of voice and word.
With the drive and desire to look ahead, Scott is already thinking about what's next. That's proven in her Holler Nashville Session Presented by George Dickel, as she treats us to two exciting new cuts, plus a fan favourite hit.
"I wrote it inspired by a moment I had down by the river, near this waterfall outside of Nashville" Scott begins, "I was going through a heartbreak and basically had this sort of spiritual, religious experience, whatever you want to call it".
"I baptised myself in the river after a breakup" she continues. "I had this moment of rebirth and felt like I was going to be ok again for the first time in a long time, so this song is very special to me".
Scott's forthright lyricism allows you to sink into her music so easily. Sure, it's undoubtedly personal, but the way in which Scott embraces this through universal themes of break-ups, personal growth and finding one's self are what make her songs distinctive and memorable. Come back to us in a couple days and tell us you've haven't got that whistle hook stuck in your head, we dare you.
The dejected 'Lipstick On You' is next - a prime favourite from Bar Stool Confessions, you can tell that Scott isn't afraid to exhibit her vulnerability to find empowerment for herself and those that listen. We've all been stuck on that one person we just can't shake, and that makes us feel worse with each passing day; 'Lipstick On You' goes someway to leaving it all on the page and turning a corner for the better.
We close with quite suitably with a new chapter - the defiant and liberating 'I Believe In Love Again'. Set in the narrative of the person you love marrying someone else, Scott finds strength in finding the centre within herself - opening the curtains to let the sun shine in at the darkest of moments. It's there you realise how easy it is to lose yourself in something you believe to be right, and how you will, one day, find love again.
