Lainey Wilson - 'Whirlwind'

Label: BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville

Release Date: August 23rd, 2024

Album: Whirlwind

Songwriters: Lainey Wilson, Trannie Anderson & Dallas Wilson

Producer: Jay Joyce

The Background:

After her 2022 breakthrough record, Bell Bottom Country, the genre's eyes were peeled for what Lainey Wilson would deliver next.

Nearly two years later, her follow-up project, Whirlwind, has arrived, analyzing everything the reigning CMA and ACM Entertainer of the Year has experienced over the last couple of years as her career as exploded and she's become the leading lady of country music.

For essentially the first time in her growing catalogue, the 14-track album finds the Louisiana native commenting on her love life. Whether it's the good or bad parts of a romantic relationship, Wilson has plenty to share on Whirlwind, starting with its infectious title track.

The Sound:

Helmed by her trusty producer, Jay Joyce, who was also the mastermind behind Bell Bottom Country, 'Whirlwind' sees Wilson taking a unique sonic approach.

Where her songs are usually fed by organic instrumentation and either stripped back country elements or in-your-face rock pieces, 'Whirlwind' finds Wilson practically on the dance floor as synth, a killer baseline and other pop characteristics swirl around her with great effect.

With a cinematic opening, the song quickly falls into a moody, mid-tempo bop that shows off Wilson's upper vocal register quite nicely in the chorus. While it's not something we've ever really heard from the decorated entertainer before, it's four minutes of pure glee that still holds true to her classic '70s-tinged sound.

The Meaning:

"I was a lone wolf
Had my own back
Climbing that mountain only voice howling
Was my own pack
I was a lonestar
Shooting for the moon
But I finally found a rebel who’s on the same level
When I found you"

We find Wilson looking back on how her life used to be before she found her romantic partner. Taking on the world as a lone wolf with only herself to look out for her, she paints the picture of being too busy following her own dreams and chasing her destiny to ever be concerned with love.

Yet, as fate would have it, her path crossed with his, and the rest has become history.

"We’re a whirlwind cutting through a Texas town
Yeah this funnel wouldn’t be near as fun without you spinning round
Yeah we’re always on the move at a daredevils speed
Running with the buzzards and the tumbleweeds
We’re a whirlwind but baby loving you’s a breeze"

Now that they've joined forces, the pair of lovers describe themselves like a whirlwind. With everything spinning around them and running at a million miles an hour, everything is okay because they have each other.

Despite life's obstacles and the ups and downs that are unavoidable, their love remains simple. As she simply states, "loving [them's] a breeze."

"Yeah, it’s a long road
It’s a rat race
But you keep my head cool ya keep my heart full
On a half tank
I was one set of tracks a million miles an hour
But two palominos is more horsepower"

Explaining that life is a marathon, not a sprint, with everyone out there fiercely competing against each other for power or wealth, Wilson notes that her partner manages to keep her on solid ground with a level head. Even when she's running on empty and doesn't have anything to give, his love is enough to fill her up and keep her going, which is all you can really ask.

In another metaphor, Wilson describes herself has a runaway train running on her own at full speed, but now with another person to share the load with, she realized they can go twice the distance together.

"We’re a whirlwind cutting through a Texas town
Yeah this funnel wouldn’t be near as fun without you spinning round
Yeah we’re always on the move at a daredevils speed
Running with the buzzards and the tumbleweeds
We’re a whirlwind but baby loving you’s a breeze
Loving you’s a breeze"

What has Lainey Wilson said about 'Whirlwind'?

While nothing has been shared specifically about 'Whirlwind,' Wilson has been open about the fact that this new project has been a major source of solace and self-discovery over the last few years as she's seen her life completely change while her career has skyrocketed.

Weaving together the highs, lows and in-betweens that she's experienced along the way, her signature storytelling is front and center across the project, which she explains has been in the works essentially since the release of Bell Bottom Country in October of 2022.

“This album has been a long time coming, and I can’t wait for the world to have this body of work in their hands soon,” Wilson noted when announcing the highly-anticipated project. “This new chapter of music is the most cathartic and personal piece of art I’ve ever made. I hope this record brings some peace to your whirlwind and wraps its arms around you like it did for me.”

Expanding on these sentiments, the decorated entertainer also added: "Writing & recording these 14 songs over the past couple of years has helped me stay grounded in ways you’d never believe. This album brought me back to my roots and made me feel at home during times when I couldn’t have been further away and my biggest hope is that it gives you that same sense of comfort that it has for me."
