In just at a year since the release of his breakout single, 'Take It Slow,' Hudson Westbrook has been utterly soaking in the limelight with one solid release after another.
With his debut EP arriving last fall and a string of releases being peppered out in the months since, it's evident that the native Texan is one of the genre's next generation of superstars as we edge closer and closer to his debut full-length record.
In the first few months of 2025, Westbrook has dished out the emotive 'Mine Tomorrow,' sensual 'Dressed Down' and the morose 'Weatherman.' Now he's offering another golden nugget of his artistry with the bluesy 'Sober.'
First teased on socials on April 8, the slow-rolling tune finds Westbrook scaled back as a bevy of organic instrumentation and a bluesy, moody electric guitar carry the tune from start to finish.
As ever, Westbrook's southern-singed drawl his strong and steady across the tune, letting his nasally vocals take centerstage as he paints an intoxicating portrait of young love.
“Started with hello darling
Ended with don’t go darling
What you put in your eyes
Don’t say it ain't nothing
You had me stumbling
Had to be something"
Westbrook takes us back to the origins of this love story when he first set eyes on the girl who would change everything.
What started as a simple hello has evolved into a relationship that he can't imagine his life without, and from the first second he saw her, he knew that he was a goner.
“I was in love last night
Better than a bourbon high
That sundress was spinning me out of my mind
Turning me on one kiss at a time
I was hanging on
Never had something that hit me so strong
All of the buzzin’ and none of the hangover
My hearts on a bender I'll never be sober”
Comparing her love to being intoxicated, Westbrook explains that being with her is better than any drunken escapades or high that he could ever try to find, and all it takes is a simple kiss to make him completely inebriated.
Yet, her love sustains him without the pesky hangover and he'll keep coming back for more again and again.
“Playing for keeps darling
Lets keep it in these sheets darlin
Why fight a feeling that’s feeling this right
Might have this habit the rest of my life”
Westbrook explains that this isn't simply a game or a pass time for him. To him, there's no denying that they're meant to be together because if something feels so right than it can't be wrong... right?
Rather than fighting destiny, he accepts that her love is a drug that he'll be addicted to until the end of time.
