Megan Moroney – 'Man on the Moon'

Label: Sony Music Nashville/Columbia Records

Release Date: June 7, 2024

Album: Am I Okay?

The Background:

Since the new year, Megan Moroney has been offering up little bits of her sophomore album, giving fans a taste of the project she has described as "Lucky's cooler older cousin that can drink."

Over the last few months, the star has given us the melancholic 'No Caller ID', the tearful '28th of June' and the biting 'Indifferent'; and now, she has delivered on an album title (Am I Okay?), an upcoming release date (July 12), and a brand new single.

'Man on the Moon' launched Friday (June 7) and quickly took our anticipation for new music to greater heights.

The Sound:

The sound of 'Man on the Moon' is just as bright and playful as the lyrics to the "good riddance" anthem. Kicking off with a sturdy rhythm and a breezy guitar riff, the tune sounds vengefully joyful and carefree, especially when the chorus of crisp claps joins in.

The arrangement – punched up with a little light-hearted rock – makes for the perfect backdrop to the out-of-this-world send-off that is sure to soundtrack the summer.

The Meaning:

"Houston, he’s a problem
He’s leaving then he’s calling
He’s a headache and a half and I can’t win"

Immediately, MeMo introduces us to some guy who is giving her trouble, playing games with her head and her heart. Well, she has decided she's had enough. "Yeah I need him long gone running," she sings, explaining, "Another town or state won’t cut it / He’ll find a way to come around again."

Her solution? Send that man to the moon.

"’Cause he wants me and he needs space
Someone take this cowboy away
Somewhere far let him fly
Out of this world and off my mind
C’mon there’s gotta be a rocket somewhere taking off soon
I think it’s time we put another man on the moon"

The man in question seems flippant. One moment he wants her and then the next, he doesn't. Well, if he wants space so bad, that's exactly what the artist intends to give him.

Recruiting NASA's help or some "billionaire with money to burn", she devices a plan:

"We can tell him there’s a bar up there
And blondes for days he’d say “well where can I sign up”
And he’d be on his way
He’d be making history
And I might finally get some sleep"

With this man out of her life and off of her mind, she thinks she'll finally get some peace. He gets his space, a celestial watering hole and "blondes for days", and she gets to move on – a real "win-win situation" she calls it.

"A man on the moon / Somebody get him there soon," she pleads ahead of the closing chorus.

"’Cause he wants me and he needs space
Someone take this cowboy away
Somewhere far let him fly
Out of this world and off my mind
C’mon there’s gotta be a rocket somewhere taking off soon
I think it’s time we put another man on the moon

Man on the moon
Man on the moon
A man on the moon"

Houston he’s a problem
He’s leaving then he’s calling
He’s a headache and a half and I can’t win
Yeah I need him long gone running
Another town or state won’t cut it
He’ll find a way to come around again
And I don’t mean to be dramatic
Yeah but he's the kind of man I’d like
A hundred-thousand miles from here

’Cause he wants me and he needs space
Someone take this cowboy away
Somewhere far let him fly
Out of this world and off my mind
C’mon there’s gotta be a rocket somewhere taking off soon
I think it’s time we put another man on the moon

We can tell him there’s a bar up there
And blondes for days he’d say “well where can I sign up”
And he’d be on his way
He’d be making history
And I might finally get some sleep
No further explanation
It’s a win-win situation
I don’t mean to be dramatic
But can somebody call NASA
Or a billionaire with money to burn

’Cause he wants me and he needs space
Someone take this cowboy away
Somewhere far let him fly
Out of this world and off my mind
C’mon there’s gotta be a rocket somewhere taking off soon
I think it’s time we put another man on the moon

Oh yeah!

A man on the moon
Somebody get him there soon
No further explanation
It’s a win-win situation

’Cause he wants me and he needs space
Someone take this cowboy away
Somewhere far let him fly
Out of this world and off my mind
C’mon there’s gotta be a rocket somewhere taking off soon
I think it’s time we put another man on the moon

Man on the moon
Man on the moon
A man on the moon
