Lainey Wilson has now released her brand new album, Whirlwind, on Friday, August 23rd. The project features a stellar array of tracks such as ‘Devil Don't Go There’, ‘Ring Finger’, ‘Counting Chickens’ and the Miranda Lambert-assisted ‘Good Horses’.
Speaking ahead of the unveiling, Lainey underlined how much she's looking forward to sharing this body of work with fans, “I am so excited to finally announce Whirlwind. This album has been a long time coming and I can’t wait for the world to have this body of work in their hands soon. This new chapter of music is the most cathartic and personal piece of art I’ve ever made. I hope this record brings some peace to your whirlwind and wraps its arms around you like it did for me”.
Earlier in 2024, she'd confirmed she was hard at work on her keenly awaited follow-up to Bell Bottom Country, with the ‘Wildflowers and Wild Horses’ singer-songwriter releasing the project's lead single, ‘Country's Cool Again’, on February 16.
The ‘Watermelon Moonshine’ hitmaker first teased the song in October 2023, with some fans speculating that the playful, uptempo anthem would serve as the title-track for the album. This prediction was strengthened by the fact that Lainey named her 2024 run of shows ‘The Country's Cool Again Tour’. Yet, in May, Lainey kept fans on their toes by revealing the title of the project would in fact be ‘Whirlwind’.
Upon kicking off her highly-anticipated 2024 run of shows across the U.S., Wilson treated Nashville fans to a sneak peek of a few songs that we should expect to grace the album. Among them being a rowdy party song called 'Bell Bottoms Up,' which cleverly takes its name from her just-opened Broadway bar.
Elsewhere during the tour kickoff shows, Wilson performed a cinematic ballad called 'Good Horses' with fellow leading lady Miranda Lambert, which adds another entry to her discography about being a free spirited rambler who can't be tied down. Though this one has an undeniable positive twist not yet seen from Wilson.
Excitingly during her Artist of the Day interview at CMA Fest 2024, the newly-initiated Grand Ole Opry member confirmed that the studio version of the tune will also feature a collaboration moment from Lambert, marking the newest in a long string of duets from Wilson in recent years.
During the opening weekend of her Country's Cool Again Tour, she also debuted the moving love song '4x4 By You,' which pays homage to her growing up in a double wide trailer, while also professing her love to her life partner and their simple life together.
In an interview with Holler, the ‘Heart Like A Truck’ singer-songwriter revealed that her ‘Fast Lainers’ fanbase can look forward to hearing more love songs on the project, with Lainey drawing inspiration from her boyfriend of over two years, Devlin ‘Duck’ Hodges.
Lainey underlined that she wrote more than 300 songs for her acclaimed and award-winning 2022 album, Bell Bottom Country, even though only 16 ended up making the cut. This was due to a significant portion of the writing period falling during the pandemic, leaving her with more time at home to put her lyrical pen into action.
The country star seems to be tackling her new record with a similar mindset, with Lainey Wilson emphasising, “I'm like, 'I need to write 100, 150 songs to choose 12.' I want to show that growth through my lyrics, the singing, the stories, all of it”.
Although much of the album's content was kept under wraps in the lead-up to its release, one thing remained certain - it would once again be full to the brim with country gold. Now that Whirlwind has spun out into the world, it's safe to say Lainey met the sky-high expectations that fans had been harbouring ahead of the album's arrival.
