After a week of intense rumours and teasers, on Thursday, February 8th, Kacey Musgraves confirmed that her 5th studio album would be released March 15th, 2024.

The record, entitled Deeper Well, will consist of 14 songs, including the ethereal title-track, which she released the music video for upon announcing.

Taking to social media to unveil the project, Musgraves said; "It's a collection of songs I hold very dear to my heart. I hope it makes a home in all of your hearts too".

The 'Deeper Well' singers' post on Instagram also revealed that the album will possess two covers, both photographed by her sister, Kelly Christine Sutton.

Kacey Musgraves had been relatively quiet in the years since her 2021 project, star-crossed, which caused a stir due to its pop-leaning sonics and its subsequent high-profile omission from all of the country categories at the 2022 Grammys.

Although star-crossed remains a beloved project among Kacey's loyal fanbase, the record is viewed by many as standing in the shadow of the Texan's 2018 opus, Golden Hour.

Nonetheless, 2024 is shaping up to be the year Kacey Musgraves reasserts herself as one of the biggest artists in country, with Variety hinting that this year will see her emphatic return to the genre.

The momentum behind the ‘Follow Your Arrow’ hitmaker is high, following a string of blockbuster collaborations, including her Hot 100-topping Zach Bryan duet, ‘I Remember Everything’.

In addition, Kacey Musgraves linked up with one of the brightest sparks in the modern folk scene, Noah Kahan, for a stellar reimagining of his Stick Season stand-out, ‘She Calls Me Back’.

Despite the fact that these two collaborations veer towards a more Americana-inspired lane, it looks like Kacey Musgraves’ 2024 project will be grounded firmly in country.

Fans were excited to read in a January Variety article that they can look forward to an all-out country record, “Musgraves affiliated herself with Interscope as well as Universal Music Nashville on ‘Star-Crossed,’ but if you think being hooked up with a pop label means she’s moving toward strictly a pop play, we’ve heard the forthcoming album is something that is still very much for her longtime country base”.

Kacey Musgraves teased further details of her forthcoming new album with a video entitled ‘My Saturn Has Returned…” during the Grammy Awards on Sunday 5th February.

After the country singer teased new music on Saturday 3rd February with nine caption-less posts of her lying naked in a green field, she released a full commercial for new music during the 66th annual Grammy Awards, with a cryptic video featuring geese and a kestrel and some flying clumps of grassy earth along with three socials posts that gave further clues to the new project.

According to the singer’s website the album is set for March 15th and is provisionally titled "KM5." It is available on vinyl as picture disc and as a version with a limited edition sleeve, cassette, CD and a CD with a fanzine.

“I’m saying goodbye to the people that I feel are real good at wasting my time,” she captioned the first post on socials alongside a photo of her holding an acoustic guitar. “No regrets, baby, I just think that maybe you go your way and I’ll go mine. ”

“It’s been a real good time,” she added to the next post of some sheep in a field. “But, you’ve got dark energy, something I can’t unsee and I’ve got to take care of myself..”

The last post is a video of the commercial that she teased during the Grammy awards on Sunday night with the words, "I found a deeper well..." alongside it, which - along with an image of a compass with the letters “K M D W” on that is now her social media avatar - suggest that the album or single might be titled “Deeper Well.”

“My saturn has returned,” she sings at the end of the clip, which could also be a hint at a song or album title.

As we keep our eyes peeled for any details and tantalising unreleased snippets from Kacey Musgraves’ upcoming project, it's safe to say we've all got ‘Butterflies’ in our stomachs as we eagerly await the singer-songwriter's star-crossed follow-up.
