Megan Moroney's latest album Am I Okay? features a potent mix of breakup ballads, head-over-heals epics and just all-around good timing tunes, and in almost every one of the record's offerings, there is a lesson to be learned.
Some of the album's most important truths comes by way of 'I Know You', a searing slow-burner that should inspire us all to recognize our worth and trust our gut.
'I Know You' sounds pensive and guarded from the start, the stark ballad coming to life in a steady trickle of bluegrass flourishes, all groaning steel and silvery strings. Heated strums begin to infiltrate the tune with the stab of each pointed lyric, but the song doesn't deviate much from its firm arrangement.
'I Know You' is steadfast and sharp, guided by the emotion of the tune. Ultimately, the sound mirrors its words, the composition set aflame when Moroney's lyrics ignite.
I know you
And you’re out sipping whiskey with some girl you barely know
While you’re texting me you miss me
Say you’re sitting home alone
I’m two-thousand miles away and you can’t help that you can’t change
You’ll wake up with her in the bed I made
When it comes to being scorned by a lover, this isn't MeMo's first rodeo. She says as much throughout 'I Know You', a song that finds her jilted by the same person time and again.
She knows her unfaithful partner's game because it's one he's played before, lying to and cheating on her while she's away. According to the tune's name and its titular lyric, she's come to expect such behavior. She knows him, after all. She's got him pegged, singing in the chorus:
I know you
You’ll say baby you know me
I was just drunk and so lonely
I swear she only came over ‘cause you weren't here to hold me
You ask for one more chance
That’s all it’ll take
And I’ll be in for another heartbreak
She knows all the excuses – the ones he often flings to make her believe it's her fault – and can see exactly how these confrontations will play out. But, in the end, she knows herself, too. She knows he'll ask for another chance and she knows she'll give it to him.
He's likely said he'll change, gift her empty promises and half-hearted apologies. However, she knows the truth, singing throughout the song:
I know you...
While Megan Moroney hasn't shared the finer details regarding 'I Know You', she has briefly touched on the making of and inspiration behind her sophomore effort. Am I Okay? is a deeply personal collection of tracks, beautifully reflecting this moment in her life and career.
“After putting Lucky out and getting to a point where my fans and I know each other so much better, I felt like I could open up and discuss things I’ve never talked about in my music before,” she explained in a statement. “Sometimes it almost feels like oversharing, but I feel like I have a responsibility to all the people who send me DMs or talk to me at shows and tell me how my songs helped them through a breakup or a bad time in their lives. If I can write about my heartbreak and make someone else feel like there’s a way out, then of course I’m going to keep doing that."
She adds: “Going into making this record, I was getting a lot of outside opinions on what my second album should be. After a while I realized I just needed to stay true to how I started writing songs when I was 19, and then focus on making music that sonically supports the stories I’m telling. I did my best to block out all that outside noise, and just lead with honesty the whole way through."
In the end, she offers, “I wanted to capture what life feels like in your 20s, where one minute you’re sad about an ex and the next you’re just having fun with your friends and couldn’t care less. My emotions can be all over the place, and I want my songs to make people feel like they have permission to be messy too.”

You’ll wake up with her in the bed I made
I know you
The same old you
I know you
You’re lying
I’m crying
We do this time after time
You say that your phone’s gonna die
Then you just go put it on silent
But I won’t give you up
And you won't walk away
I know I’m in for another heartbreak
I know you
And you’re out sipping whiskey with some girl you barely know
While you’re texting me you miss me
Say you’re sitting home alone
I’m two-thousand miles away and you can’t help that you can’t change
You’ll wake up with her in the bed I made
I know you
The same old you oh
I know you
You’ll say baby you know me
I was just drunk and so lonely
You’re lying I’m crying
We do this time after time
The same old you oh
