Post Malone - ‘Hey Mercedes’

Release Date: August 16th, 2024

Album: F-1 Trillion - Long Bed

Songwriters: Austin Post, Charlie Handsome & Louis Bell

Producers: Charlie Handsome & Louis Bell

The Background:

Post Malone has single handedly taken over the country genre since he began teasing that his debut country record was on its way.

With blockbuster singles that included 'I Had Some Help' with Morgan Wallen, 'Pour Me A Drink' with Blake Shelton and 'Guy For That' alongside Luke Combs, the stage was set for the highly-anticipated release of F-1 Trillion.

Already notching a hefty 18 songs, the standard version of the project includes features with the likes of Sierra Ferrell, Chris Stapleton, Lainey Wilson and a running list of the who's who in the genre. However, in the middle of the album's release day on August 16, Post Malone shocked fans yet again with the news that he had an expanded version of the album up his sleeve.

With an additional nine songs, F-1 Trillion - Long Bed consists of song's solely from the genre-blending hitmaker. What it may lack in guest vocals, though, it makes up for in substance and style.

One of the newly added songs, 'Hey Mercedes' is one of the most fun and tongue-in-cheek of the bunch, showcasing Malone's signature joy and charisma throughout. Taking on the form of a pick-up line revolving around a potential love interest's car, it's a nostalgic offering that provides some welcomed easy listening.

The Sound:

In just under three and a half minutes, Post Malone, alongside his co-writers and producers Charlie Handsome & Louis Bell, bring forth a wave of nostalgia and levity that feels (and sounds) reminiscent of the 2000s heyday of country music.

With bright instrumentation and lighthearted lyrics, it's a joyful little tune that uses clever car references and metaphors to tie together a cheeky love song that's a perfect inclusion to the extended set of songs on F-1 Trillion - Long Bed.

The Meaning:

On the porch with a beer
Saw you park between all these jacked up trucks
And girl it's pretty clear that you don't come around here much
Just had to stop you 'fore you got inside
And the boys started gettin' in line

If you ask us, we picture a crowded dive bar on the ourskirts of town, abounding in beat up pickup trucks and country decor when we hear this song. Setting the scene, Post Malone spies a little set of wheels pull up that doesn't quite fit in with the sea of jacked up, chromed-out pick up trucks.

As the driver steps out, it's apparent that she doesn't frequent the spot as she sticks out like a sore thumb. However, Post sees his chance and tried to saddle up to her before all the other guys try to do the same.

Hey, Mercedes
Whatcha doin' for the rest of your night?
Pretty lady
Would you wanna take me out for a ride?
I don't know why you came
Where you're from, what's your name
And I know that you don't know mine
Call me crazy
Hey, Mercedes
Whatcha doin' for the rest of your life?

Affectionately referring to her by the car that she rode up in, what we can only assume was a Mercedes, Malone puts on the charm as he tries to pick her up in the only way a country boy knows how.

Asking what her plans are for the rest of the night, he volunteers to spend his with her. Even though he doesn't know the first thing about her, or she about him, Malone has become instantly smitten and is ready to spend the rest of his life with her, if she'll let him.

Baby, I'm standing here tryna smoke
Had to have me a quick cigarette
And now all that I know is that I ain't quit yet
You never know, girl, it just might be fate
Or a damn good time, if it ain't

Explaining that he just happened to be outside for a smoke break – and how glad he is that he hasn't kicked the habit quite yet since it led to their clandestine meeting – Malone claims that perhaps it was fate that brought them together.

Or else, if not that, then surely they can have a good time before the sun comes up in the morning?

"Hey, Mercedes
Whatcha doin' for the rest of your night?
Pretty lady
Would you like to take me out for a ride?
I don't know why you came
Where you're from, what's your name
And I know that you don't know mine
Call me crazy
Hey, Mercedes
Whatcha doin' for the rest of your life?"

What has Post Malone said about ‘Hey Mercedes’?

Post Malone has not spoken about 'Hey Mercedes’ specifically just yet, but the New York native has touched more broadly on how welcoming the country music community has been to him since he announced his foray into the genre.

In an interview with Anthony Mason for CBS in Nashville, the ‘Chemical’ singer-songwriter shared, “Everyone here was so accepting and kind.” When Mason described this as a testament to Post Malone's genial, warm character, Posty immediately responded with an endearing dismissal, “I disagree. I think it's a testament to them.

And I know that you don't know mine
Call me crazy
Hey, Mercedes
Whatcha doin' for the rest of your life?

I've had one too many to take you down any
Of these backroads outside of town
I'm just thinking you might show me if that thing drives
Half as good as you look right now

Hey, Mercedes
Whatcha doin' for the rest of your night?
Pretty lady
Would you like to take me out for a ride?
I don't know why you came
Where you're from, what's your name
And I know that you don't know mine
Call me crazy
Hey, Mercedes
Whatcha doin' for the rest of your life?

Hey, Mercedes
Hey, Mercedes
Whatcha doin' for the rest of your life?
