After the immense success of Yellowstone, Paramount continues to mine country music for more on-screen hits.
Its latest offering is George and Tammy, an addictive miniseries that examines the intertwined lives of one of country music's most iconic couples, George Jones and Tammy Wynette.
The first episode debuted on December 4 on Paramount, Showtime and CMT simultaneously, with the popular series coming to a bittersweet close on January 8.
Fittingly, George Jones and Tammy Wynette's daughter, Georgette Jones, makes an appearance during the finale as a back-up singer while the duo sing ‘Lost Highway’. George and Tammy is largely based on Georgette Jones’ 2011 memoir, The Three Of Us: Growing Up With Tammy and George.
Their tumultuous relationship and the drama that ensued inevitably makes for brilliant viewing, with Jessica Chastain and Michael Shannon adopting the roles of the country legends.
Over the course of their married life, which began in 1969, Jones and Wynette were country music's power couple. However, it was no secret that Jones' alcoholism was putting a strain on the relationship, which eventually deteriorated in 1975.
The duo recorded a number of timeless classics, both during their marriage and long after, such as ‘Golden Ring’ and ‘We're Gonna Hold On’.
The vulnerability of their musical output, the subject matter of which would often reflect the struggles that the couple were facing outside the studio, catapulted their releases to the top of the country charts.
Since then, alongside their stellar solo careers, George Jones and Tammy Wynette's collaborations are widely considered to be some of the most valuable jewels in country music history.
