Post Malone & Hank Williams Jr. - ‘Finer Things’

Official Release Date: August 16th, 2024

Album: F-1Trillion

Songwriters: Post Malone, Louis Bell, Charlie Handsome, Luke Combs, Josh Thompson, James McNair & ERNEST

Producers: Louis Bell & Charlie Handsome

The Background:

‘Finer Things’ is a classic, rowdy country anthem that feels as though it's been cherry-picked straight out of Hank Williams Jr.'s formidable discography. The appearance of the country icon on this track was one of the biggest surprises when Post Malone's 2024 F-1Trillion tracklist dropped, with Hank famously reluctant to freely offer up duets - especially with artists hailing from the rap and pop worlds.

It's a valuable, coveted co-sign for Post Malone, with the ‘Chemical’ hitmaker even choosing a key lyric from ‘Finer Things’ as the inspiration behind the album's title, F-1Trillion.

The Sound:

’Finer Things’ finds Post Malone leaning into his charismatic rasp, with the raucous, swaggering track following in a playfully boastful ambience - in a similar way to to Posty's HIXTAPE Vol. 3 track, ‘Pick-Up Man’ alongside the late great Joe Diffie.

Hank injects his trademark braggadocio into his portions of this infectious down-home anthem, which follows seamlessly on from the flamboyant, rocky opener, ’Wrong Ones’.

The Meaning:

“Catfish caviar, South of Florida cigar

Stag grip, single action fallin' out my Chrome Hearts

Platinum on my teeth and wagyu on my grill

George Jones crankin' out my Coupe DeVille

Yeah, I'm a five star, hell-raisin' dive bar rockstar”

‘Finer Things’ feels more closely aligned with the exuberant, outrageous persona of Posty's rap hits than any other track on F-1Trillion, with the New York native reeling off a list of ways in which he combines his luxurious and down-home tastes.

Examples of this tongue-in-cheek juxtaposition include his love for “catfish caviar” and his decision to proudly brandish a gun with a stag grip dangling from the holster on his flashy Chrome Hearts belt. ‘Finer Things’ perfectly encapsulates Posty's keenness to embrace country music culture, while still staying true to himself. Amusingly, Post Malone seems to tip his cap to ’Pick-Up Man’ by referencing a Cadillac Coupe de Ville, which he jokingly disregards on the Joe Diffie track.

“I got a thing for the finer things

I'm in the deer blind with a diamond ring

My Lambo and my ammo's all camo green

Yeah, I got a F-1Trillion limousine

I got a 10-point blonde in the shotgun seat

I got a thing, got a thing for the finer things

Yeah, I do, hmm”

The hook is part-excess, part-hilarity, with Post Malone and Hank Williams Jr. taking things to the extreme by describing their souped up F-150 truck as an F-1Trillion limousine. Posty has a customised F-150 truck in real life, called the Ford VelociRaptor.

Again epitomising Posty's country-city fusion is his decision to don glitzy diamond rings while he's dressed head to toe in camo in a deer blind. There's even a ‘10-point’ blonde buck - a particularly large deer to hunt - in the seat next to him.

“I got a fifty-foot pontoon, tripled up Evinrude

Leavin' a tidal wave of wake when I flow through

Sippin’ on a solo of Pappy Reserve

Big H on the top of my getaway bird

Oh, turn up the ‘Ramblin' Man’

'Til the whole lake knows I'm a Hank fan”

When we join Hank Williams Jr., he's happily cruising down the lake on his gigantic Evinrude pontoon, which leaves a tidal wave in its wake, due to its monstrous size.

He's happily drinking some expensive bourbon out of his comparatively modest - yet unmistakably redneck - solo cup, with Hank Williams Jr. even claiming to have a ‘Big H’ emblazoned across his private jet. As he has done so often throughout his storied career, he pays tribute to his father, country legend Hank Williams, by highlighting how he'll be blasting his 1951 classic, ‘Ramblin’ Man’, through the speakers, so that everyone else on the lake knows for sure that he's a “Hank fan”.

What have Post Malone and Hank Williams Jr. said about ‘Finer Things’?

Despite not speaking about ‘Finer Things’ just yet, Post Malone has paid homage on a number of occasions to how warm and welcoming the country music world has been to him. Hank Williams Jr. - one of the more traditional heavyweights of the genre - appearing on ’Finer Things’ feels like a colossal seal of approval.

In a 2024 CBS interview with Anthony Mason, the ‘Chemical’ singer-songwriter shared, “Everyone here was so accepting and kind”. When Mason provided the explanation that this is a testament to Post Malone's kind-hearted character, Posty responded with an endearing dismissal, “I disagree. I think it's a testament to them”.
