Kane Brown & Katelyn Brown - ‘Do Us Apart’

Official Release Date: January 24th, 2025

Album: The High Road

Songwriters: Kane Brown, Gabe Foust, Jaxson Free & Taylor Phillips

The Background:

When husband-and-wife duo Kane and Katelyn Brown released the R&B-leaning ‘Body Talk’ in the lead-up to the former's album, The High Road, dropping in January 2025, fans assumed this was the project's only duet with Katelyn we'd be treated to.

Excitingly, though, when The High Road's official tracklist was revealed, listeners were pleasantly surprised to see that Kane and Katelyn had joined forces for another collaboration, ‘Do Us Apart’, which pivots around a heartwarming play on the traditional wedding vow - “to love and to cherish, till death do us part”. ‘Do Us Apart’ marks the third collaboration between Kane and Katelyn Brown, with the couple dropping the CMT-award winning ’Thank God’ back in 2022.

The Sound:

Particularly when compared to ‘Body Talk’, ‘Do Us Apart’ explores a considerably more traditional country feel that veers closer to the ambience of ‘Thank God’.

The enchanting twang of the lead guitar gives ‘Do Us Apart’ a ‘90s country sheen at times, with Kane and Katelyn's vocals again complementing each other beautifully.

The Meaning:

“Long after that sun burns out that sky
Long after that ocean don't turn the tide
One thing is true
I’ll be loving you”

The crux of ‘Do Us Apart’ is Kane and Katelyn Brown professing their undying love to one another, with the duo endearingly stressing that nothing - not even death - can part them.

Kane looks ahead to a time when the sun is extinguished and the ocean no longer has a tide, before movingly stating that even then, his love for Katelyn will be as fervent as ever.

“And one day when the mountains and the valleys align
I'll still be yours
You'll still be mine
One thing is true
I’ll be loving you”

This verse feels like a reference to Isaiah 40:4 in the Bible, in which it's written that when God arrives on Earth, “Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain”.

This doubles-down on the idea that, when the end-of-time approaches and everything is falling, Kane and Katelyn Brown's commitment to one another will still be standing strong.

“A love like this'll live on, I know
Even on the day that He calls me home
No, I won't be far
Even death won't do us apart”

The spiritually-minded imagery is extended here, as the two protagonists accept they'll be called up to Heaven, but their passionate love will continue long into the afterlife. The titular lyric is a clever flip on the classic marriage vow, in which couples promise to love and cherish each other until “death do us part” - but Kane and Katelyn are emphasising that they'll keep their love going long after this.

“I'm taking every day that forever will give
In this life and the life after this
Hang a hat on your heart
Even death won't do us apart”

The line “Hang a hat on your heart” suggests that each partner's ‘home’ is wherever the other is, with the location where you ‘hang your hat’ usually the place you call home.

“Wе're a flame that wasn't meant for burning out
Wе’ll be standing tall when it all burns down
One thing is true
I’ll be loving you”

Kane and Katelyn Brown continue the metaphor of the sun burning out in the opening verse here, by framing their love as a flame that will keep flickering for all eternity. They then transition to depicting a world that is burning around them, before again determining that they will be holding onto one another amidst the lashing flames.

What has Kane Brown said about ‘Do Us Apart’?

Kane and Katelyn Brown have not delved into the process of crafting ‘Do Us Apart’ just yet, but when touching on the record as a whole, Kane explained, “This album, The High Road, is my favorite album I’ve ever made. I get to explore all sides of my story and styles of my music. Every song is important to me and every collaboration means something personal to me. I’m so incredibly proud of this record”.
