Blue Ox Music Festival 2023

The organisers behind Blue Ox Music Festival have been working hard to once again bring some of the most exciting bluegrass, Americana, Roots and alt-country performers to Eau Claire, Wisconsin in 2023. 

The full line-up for the June 22-24 event has now been confirmed, with the likes of 

 and Sam Bush Band all set to take the stage. 

They'll be joined by the likes of The Infamous Stringdusters, Mike Gordon, Kyle Tuttle, Sierra Hull, Charlie Parr, Joshua Ray Walker, Buffalo Galaxy, Sicard Hollow and more.

The Wisconsin festival celebrates the best in bluegrass and Americana music, having been founded in 2015. Various top-tier performers have graced the Pines Music Park stage in Eau Claire, from alt-country stars, Tyler Childers and Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, to bluegrass prodigies such as Billy Strings and Molly Tuttle.

The 2022 instalment featured acts such as Old Crow Medicine Show, Béla Fleck My Bluegrass Heart, Railroad Heart and more. 

The festival has built a reputation for being a vibrant, eclectic experience that stimulates all the senses, with a number of activities available to attendees throughout the three-day event. 

Fans can enjoy The Soul Sanctuary, for instance, a tent that enables visitors to try wellness practices such as sound healing, meditation, reiki and more. The festival site also encompasses a 9-hole disc golf course.

Charley Crockett has an aura of myth about him. As the distant relative of American folk hero Davy Crockett, he's lived up to his ancestor's name, traveling all over the country and gathering its influences into what he describes as his 'Gulf + Western music', which blends traditional country, honky tonk, blues and soul.  

Crockett was born in 1984. He grew up in Texas, where he taught himself to play guitar and write songs without any formal training. He left home at 17, using music to support himself as he busked and played in New Orleans, New York, and across the U.S. 

His talents attracted attention from the music industry, including a two-year management deal with Sony Records, but that didn't pan out. Instead, he went to Northern California, where he worked on farms, before heading to France and Morocco. 

When he returned Stateside, Crockett self-released his debut album 

 in 2015. Over the next six years, he went on to release a total of ten albums. But it wasn't until the release of 2020's 

that he began attracting more national attention for his music.  

He followed that breakthrough with a tribute album in honor of James 'Slim' Hand called 

10 For Slim: Charley Crockett Sings James Hand, 

which he released in 2021. That same year, Crockett released his tenth studio album 

At the age of 37, he was named Emerging Artist of the Year at the Americana Music Awards in 2021.

The musical partnership between Scott and Seth Avett started long before their 2002 debut album Country Was. The brothers grew up playing music with their family, including a more professional attempt when Seth joined Scott and their sister Margo’s college band Nemo. 

But ultimately it was Scott and Seth’s roots-infused harmonies and their genre-blending sound that has stood the test of time. They just needed one more musician to round them out. The pair met upright bassist Bob Crawford around 2001 and began performing together. From there, the Avett Brothers was set. 

Combining numerous roots genres, including bluegrass, folk, and even honkytonk, their music showcases an earnest and intimate lyricism, which has earned them Americana Music Awards for Duo/Group of the Year and Grammy nominations along the way.

Since their debut, the Avett Brothers have continued to release a steady churn of beloved and best-selling albums, including 2007’s Emotionalism, 2009’s I and Love and You and 2012’s The Carpenter — the latter two of which were produced by Rick Rubin. 

In 2017, they released a documentary titled May It Last: Portrait of the Avett Brothers, which took viewers behind the scenes of their 2016 album True Sadness.

Over the past few years, Maxim has interviewed some of his favourite artists, including Kelsea Ballerini, HARDY, Riley Green, Bailey Zimmerman, Midland, Ernest, Molly Tuttle and more. 

Since joining Holler towards the end of 2022, he has expanded the news output and introduced new article formats such as Lyrics & Meaning pieces, Exclusive Q&As and Album Hub Pages. 

Maxim enjoys staying on the pulse of the latest releases, and is a country aficionado and avid listener of anything by Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, Lainey Wilson, George Strait, Florida Georgia Line, Niko Moon, Megan Moroney and Zach Bryan, as well as keenly covering Post Malone’s transition into country music. 

Above all, Maxim considers himself Kenny Chesney’s No. 1 fan.
