Earlier this month, Ashley Cooke began teasing a special guest and all-star collaborator set to appear on an upcoming single. It didn't take long, however, for fans to pinpoint Joe Jonas as the pop icon who would be featured on her latest taste of new music, 'All I Forgot'.
The achy opus showcases the best of both artists, serving up Cooke's effortless vocal prowess and Jonas' remarkable artistic intuition on a country pop platter. Together, the pair breathe life into what is undoubtedly poised to be the breakup hit of the summer.
Born from the crisp timbre of resonant strings, 'All I Forgot' immediately grabs hold of listeners' attentions, preparing them for the swirling country pop ballad that is about to unravel. Soon, atmospheric synths and pillowy rhythms erupt, enveloping the tune in a blanket of plush and sweeping sounds. The arrangement provides the perfect foil for such an anguished number to come to life.
"I need a mind eraser
Another shot no chaser
Need a heart replacer on my tab
Got a stool I’m saving
Like a fool I’m waiting
And the music’s taking me right back
It’s been a long night
But the missing you ain’t gone
Baby am I drinking wrong"
'All I Forgot', like many a country breakup song, attempts to find answers at the bottom of a bottle. Throughout the song, Cooke looks to strong cocktails and shots sans chaser in order to find relief from this heartache she finds herself wrapped in.
After a long night on a barstool, sipping this and shooting that, her liquid remedies don't seem to be working. She's stuck with memories of the one she once loved and left to wonder if she's been drinking all wrong.
"‘Cause I just killed a bottle," she sings in the chorus, "And all that I forgot / Was I was moving on / I was staying strong / I’ll feel it tomorrow / ‘Cause all that I forgot was everyone except for you / That ain’t what this drink’s supposed to do / All I forgot was everything except for you."
Not only is the alcohol not working, it's making things worse, bringing up tough to swallow thoughts about the past and calling forth feelings that were meant to be washed away.
It turns out that Cooke, however, is not the only one trapped in this vicious cycle of ache, drink, repeat. Her counterpart is also experiencing a similar tailspin, with Joe Jonas singing:
"Every sip I’m sippin’
Got me reminiscing
I remember kissing on your lips
Pouring something stronger
Only makes me want you even more than I already did
It’s been a long night
But the missing you ain’t gone
Baby am I drinking wrong
Ooh"
Cooke even doubles down in the bridge, lilting, "I swear every time it’s gonna be fool proof / By the end of the night it's tunnel vision you."
According to 'All I Forgot', no matter how hard you try, you can't outdrink your feelings. That's why these two are stuck, left to drink it off and then remember all that's still missing.
