After revealing last month that he'd crafted some visuals to accompany his acclaimed Boys Of Faith EP, Zach Bryan has released the official music video for the project's title-track.
The beautifully sparse, Bon Iver-assisted song finds Zach paying tribute to all the good times he's enjoyed with his friends, and the new video captures this endearing sense of camaraderie.
Written by Zach Bryan himself and directed by Matthew Dillon Cohen, it's the first fully produced music video released by the ‘Something in the Orange’ hitmaker since he dropped the evocative visuals for ‘Oklahoma Smokeshow’ in May 2023.
The cinematic ‘Boys Of Faith’ music video opens with the protagonist clearing through some old items in cardboard boxes, before stumbling across a dog-eared travel journal.
As he flicks through the sepia-tinged images, the viewer is transported back in time to the moments immortalised in the pages, with the young man driving across the country with his buddies as they make memories in run-down bars, a desert expanse and more.
Although these flashbacks are coloured by an unmistakable joy and freedom, every time we rejoin the man looking through his journal, there is a noticeable air of sadness and regret.
The reason for this is later hinted at, as he pays close attention to the photos of one friend in particular, before we learn that she's tragically passed away, with the protagonist walking up to the grave of ‘Jean ‘Doc’ Nichols’ towards the end of the video.
When Zach Bryan first teased these upcoming music videos, he mentioned that both ‘Boys Of Faith’ and ‘Nine Ball’, another stand-out from his September 2023 EP, will be receiving visuals.
Excitingly, as the ‘Boys of Faith’ story draws to a close, we see the friends leaving a bar and driving off in their 4x4. However, the camera lingers after the truck drives off, guiding the viewer's gaze towards a couple of movie posters stuck to a wall in the background, featuring a neon-lit pool table and the title ‘Nine Ball’.
Given we haven't found out how the lead character's friend died, it seems Zach Bryans forthcoming music video for ‘Nine Ball’ will serve as a sequel to ‘Boys Of Faith’.
