During a new interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Kacey Musgraves has shared how Willie Nelson recorded his contribution to her new song, ‘Uncertain, TX’, in one take.
Nelson has joined Musgraves on a number of occasions in the past, with the two Texans linking up for ‘Are You Sure’ and ‘A Willie Nice Christmas’, as well as performing at the 2019 CMA Awards, where they delivered a stellar rendition of ‘Rainbow Connection’.
Aside from this, the country trailblazers have teamed up on-stage at various points in their careers, with Musgraves regularly paying tribute to her honorary “great-grandpa”, Nelson.
The latest instalment in their storied track record of collaborations arrives on Friday (May 1st), when Nelson teams up with Musgraves for ‘Uncertain, TX’ from the latter's sixth album, Middle of Nowhere. During a newly released conversation with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Musgraves shares the story of how the duet came about.
The ‘Follow Your Arrow’ hitmaker begins by fondly joking, “Oh my gosh, anytime I can have everyone's favorite gangster great-grandpa on anything...I mean, I love him so much. He's the patriarch of true country music. I mean he can bring so many different kinds of people together, which is one thing I really love about him, and he's just incredible. I feel very lucky. This is our third time collaborating together”.
Lowe then asks, “And he's just a one-take guy?”, with Musgraves confirming, “Oh, he walks in, does the take, and literally, that's it. So it better work. He's like, ‘I'm in my 90s...I'm giving you 30 seconds, and then I'm out’. I f***ing get it. He has earned that. He's a true American legend, transcends space and time. He's amazing”.
Lowe then comments on Nelson's famous penchant for marijuana, “And I mean, I think there was, maybe not a legitimate one, maybe like an imaginary one, but I like the idea of it being a real, some kind of Gallup Poll they did about human beings in the arts that can hold their weed. And I think he's number one, Snoop's number two”.
Musgraves playfully reflects, “Oh Lord. No, if you've ever found yourself in a recreational smoking situation with Willie Nelson...”, before clarifying, “But...I don't smoke as much as I used to. I had to take a pause because I feel like the busier that you get... I don't know. I just started getting really anxious. And I was like, ‘Why do I feel so paranoid and crazy?’ Like, I just need to kind of back off. But then the more you back off, like the less you smoke, the more it affects you, obviously”.
Musgraves amusingly concludes, “So yeah...but you've got to be really careful with him. You're just like, ‘I don't know how to form sentences anymore. My motor skills are completely gone. And I don't, I don't...how do I leave? Like, how do I say goodbye?’”
Given how Musgraves imbued a sense of airy tranquility and gentle serenity into much of her previous record, Deeper Well, we'd love to see Nelson joining the ‘Cardinal’ singer-songwriter for an homage to taking it easy and ensuring your cup remains half-full. We're yet to hear ‘Uncertain, TX’, but regardless of whether it's a hazy, chilled-out homage, a vulnerable ode or a storytelling gem, with these two icons of the genre involved, we're sure it'll be a truly spellbinding collaboration.
