During his recent tour-stop, Tim McGraw has revealed the heartwarming reason why he plans to give away a ‘Pawn Shop Guitar’ at every forthcoming show on his 2026 run.

McGraw is currently in the middle of his 2026 Pawn Shop Guitar Tour, titled after his recent single of the same name, with dates lined up at New Jersey and New York later in July.

The story behind the song ‘Pawn Shop Guitar’ - which is widely expected to be the name of McGraw's next album - pivots around McGraw's early days in the music industry, when he pawned his high school football ring to purchase his very first guitar. It goes on to recount how he then ended up sleeping in his car with that same guitar, as he chased down his dreams of becoming a country music star.

Across the pared-down instrumental, McGraw nostalgically croons, “Pawned my high school ring my freshman year in college / Traded my education for some six-string knowledge”.

Now, in honour of his own origin story, the ‘Live Like You Were Dying’ hitmaker has started giving away a pawn shop guitar to a young fan from each city he and his band perform in.

In a new clip shared online, the country legend explains to the crowd, “Because of the story behind my ‘Pawn Shop Guitar’, in every city that we play in, we decided to go to a pawn shop and get a guitar. And we’re going to start some kid out tonight on their journey with their pawn shop guitar”, before addressing a fan in the front row, “And this little young lady who’s right here is going to be the first one to get it”.

McGraw has accompanied this with footage of his guitar tech, John P, visiting a local pawn shop during one of the crew's tour-stops, and liaising with the owner about which one to purchase. John P underlines, “We’re going to give it to a good cause”.

It's a heartwarming story, especially given how it nods to McGraw's own entry into country music, with the Louisiana native hopefully helping to spark a love for playing with young fans. Who knows, perhaps a child that receives a guitar from McGraw's show might one day end up emulating the ‘Humble and Kind’ crooner's success.
