During Saturday Night Live's star-studded 50th Anniversary spectacular, Post Malone joined the three surviving members of Nirvana, Dave Grohl, Pat Smear, and Krist Novoselic for a spellbinding rendition of the rock band's iconic 1991 hit, ’Smells Like Teen Spirit’.
It comes after Grohl, Smear and Novoselic reunited in January for the Los Angeles FireAid benefit concert, with this latest iteration of the band being billed as ‘Post Nirvana’.
After one of SNL's most prominent figures, Adam Sandler, introduced the performance, Post Malone launched into the much-loved track, with the ‘I Had Some Help’ hitmaker once again showcasing his unrivalled ability to flit seamlessly between genres.
Post Malone captured the anarchic ambience of the original - which featured the late Kurt Cobain as the lead vocalist - with Post roaring portions of the fiery anthem into the microphone.
Earlier in February, Post Malone revealed that he'd be releasing his 2020 tribute to Nirvana on Vinyl for the first time in April for Record Store Day 2025. The New York native delivered the powerful performance as part of a special live-stream featuring Travis Barker, Nick Mack and Brian Lee, with the project including 14 Nirvana fan-favourites such as ‘Drain You’, ‘Come As You Are’, ‘School’ and ‘In Bloom’.
With Post Malone having ventured into the country music world in 2023 for his widely acclaimed F-1Trillion project, which has spawned hits such as ‘I Had Some Help’, ‘Pour Me a Drink’ and ‘Guy For That’, could the chameleonic singer-songwriter now be preparing to try his hand at Punk Rock, possibly even as the new permanent lead singer for Nirvana? Could ‘Post Nirvana’ be the group's reformed name?
Judging by fans’ reactions to Post Malone's SNL performance with Nirvana, there's definitely a demand for the bearded crooner to record a full-blown Rock album in the near future.
Underneath his newly shared clip of the ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ set, a host of Post Malone's followers have called for a Rock project, with comments including, “I need a posty rock album”, “Make Post Nirvana a thing! We need more asap!!!”, “I'm begging you for a Rock/Punk/Metal album please” and “we need a rock album, posty”.
Amusingly, one fan joked, “I'm hearing Adam Sandler in his scream”, with Post Malone responding with the laughing-crying emoji, “😂”. Elsewhere during the SNL 50th Anniversary show, viewers were treated to a Lonely Island medley led by Andy Samberg and Lady Gaga, as well as skits from SNL legends and A-list celebrities such as Will Ferrell, Steve Martin, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Emma Stone, Jon Hamm and more.
