The Red Clay Strays surprised the crowd on their latest tour-stop with a special appearance from country prodigy, Gabriella Rose, for a cover of Johnny Cash's ‘Folsom Prison Blues’.
One of the earliest releases from The Man in Black, ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ has become one of the most lustrous jewels in Johnny Cash's crown of iconic country hits. It's not the first time The Red Clay Strays have chosen to cover Cash, delivering an electric take on ‘Ring Of Fire’ during an impromptu set at Zanies in Nashville in June.
As always, during The Red Clay Strays’ collaborative performance of ‘Folsom Prison Blues’, the band's frontman, Brendan Coleman, could barely contain the energy that fizzled out of him as he wrapped his weighty, atmospheric vocals around the beloved hook.
Gabriella Rose's enchantingly sinuous delivery complemented the drama and gravitas of Coleman's vocals, with Rose bringing a newfound sense of intricacy to the powerhouse performance.
Over the past few weeks, Gabriella Rose has emerged as one of the most exciting new voices in country music, after her gloriously tongue-in-cheek, traditional-leaning tribute to down-home living, ‘Doublewide’, went immensely viral across TikTok.
The Red Clay Strays, of course, are no strangers to social media success, with the popularity of their self-effacing 2023 ballad, ‘Wondering Why’, laying the foundation for the Alabama five-piece to position themselves at the crest of the genre's next wave of stars.
