Morgan Wallen has released the official lyric video for his latest single, ‘Smile’, with the newly shared visuals drawing inspiration from the melancholic, talkshow-inspired music video, which arrived in tandem with the song itself on New Year's Eve.

Opening with the ‘Thought You Should Know’ singer-songwriter stepping up to the microphone to sing ‘Smile’ in front of the TV crowd, the camera then pans to the teleprompter. The lyrics scroll up for the rest of the video, against a vibrant yellow backdrop.

The original music video for ‘Smile’ finds Morgan Wallen performing a volte-face for his New Year's Eve performance on a fictional talk-show called Dark Til Daylight. Initially, Wallen is meant to perform his comparatively uptempo single, ‘Love Somebody’, but after seeing the despair in the eyes of his on-screen girlfriend, he decides to deliver a rousing rendition of ‘Smile’ instead. His partner walks into the studio for a final goodbye, before she walks out the door, leaving Wallen alone as Caleb Pressley counts down to midnight in front of the celebratory audience.

The evocative track is cut from a similar cloth to July's ‘Lies, Lies, Lies’, and given the greyscale cover art shared by these songs, we wonder if Morgan Wallen is readying a double-album in the mould of 2021's record-breaking project, Dangerous.

We put forward our theory earlier in the week that Morgan Wallen might have given fans a hint as to the name of his forthcoming record through the talk-show in the ’Smile’ video, Dark Til Daylight. There is a song registered on the ASCAP and BMI database with this title, penned by some of Wallen's frequent collaborators and leading country songsmiths, Rocky Block, Jimmy Robbins and Chris Tompkins.

We'll have to wait and see what exactly Morgan Wallen has in store for us, but it seems the rollout for his highly anticipated fourth studio album is - excitingly - picking up pace.

’Smile’ surged to No. 1 on the Apple Music all-genre charts on the day of its release, and with the extra boost from this new lyric video, the brooding, introspective offering is sure to be a leading candidate for the pinnacle of the Billboard Hot 100 next week. If successful, ’Smile’ would become Morgan Wallen's second Hot 100 No. 1 debut, after ‘Love Somebody’ leapt straight to the peak in October.
