It looks like the country album Lil Durk teased back in June 2023 might still be happening, with the Chicago rapper revealing in a Red Carpet interview ahead of the 2024 Grammys that he has more new music on the way with Morgan Wallen soon.
When asked to name an artist he'd like to collaborate with, but one that fans wouldn't necessarily expect him to work with, Lil Durk smiled mischievously, “I'll say Morgan Wallen”.
Excitingly, Durk went on to explain that the two artists have a joint project up their sleeve, “Yeah, there's gonna be a collab album soon”, before joking that the record will earn him a 2025 Grammy nomination, “So that means I'll see you again next year!”
Although the ET interviewer was surprised by his suggestion, Lil Durk and Morgan have a stellar track record when it comes to collaborations. The duo combined on the fiery ‘Broadway Girls’ in 2021, before linking up again for the uplifting, synth-driven ‘Stand By Me’, which featured on Durk's celebrated 2023 Almost Healed project.
Shortly after this 2023 release, Lil Durk took to his Instagram stories to announce his hopes of recording a collaborative project with Morgan Wallen, “Me and Morgan need to do [an] album together” before highlighting how they'd “be the 1st” artists to put together a full-length country-rap body of work like this.
Endearingly, despite the different sonic spheres each artist generally operates in, Lil Durk and Morgan Wallen have become good friends over the past few years.
In May 2023, for instance, Morgan took Durk fishing, posting a photo of the two holding the fruits of their labour alongside the tongue-in-cheek caption, “Durk done pulled up and taught me how to fish”. The rapper heartwarmingly commented, “Family energy”.
Then, following Morgan Wallen's momentous show at the O2 Arena in London, UK at the end of the year, the ‘Last Night’ hitmaker was gifted a shimmering, opulent ‘OTF’ chain, as recognition of him being considered part of Durk's ‘Only The Family’ collective.
We already know that Morgan Wallen and Lil Durk recorded an additional song together ahead of Almost Healed. However, this is yet to see the light of day, so perhaps the genre-blending duo are saving it for their hotly anticipated collaborative album.
We're still waiting for official confirmation and a release date, but based on the chemistry and charisma that both Lil Durk and Morgan Wallen have brought to their collaborations so far, we're hoping this long-awaited joint album will arrive before the year is up.
