Charley Crockett has unveiled his new album, The Lonesome Drifter, with the project set to arrive on March 14th. The title-track will be made available this Friday, January 31st 2025.
Previously teased earlier in the week via Crockett's mailing list, The Lonesome Drifter serves as the ‘I'm Just a Clown’ singer-songwriter's debut project since signing to Island Records.
Speaking ahead of the release, the enigmatic, traditional-leaning crooner has explained how he teamed up with Shooter Jennings for the project, with the duo recording The Lonesome Drifter in the space of just 10 days at Los Angeles’ Sounds Studio.
Charley Crockett casually recalls how the album came to be, “Shooter and I barely talked about it. I just brought all of my guys out, and the album made itself. It was live without a lot of overdubs. There were no inhibitions. I wasn’t being judged, and I didn’t feel self-conscious. Shooter knew how to cut loose and let this thing unfold”.
The Texas maverick, who claims to be a descendent of frontiersman Davy Crockett, goes on to touch on the inspiration behind The Lonesome Drifter's title-track, “I started writing the song back when I was still playing in subways in New York. It’s how I learned to play electric guitar with an amp on my shoulder. While I was waiting for the next train, I wrote songs. A few years later, I was in California working on the ganja farms, and I came up with the ‘Lonesome Drifter’ section”.
Crockett expands, “When I arrived on the West Coast, I worked to stay out there as a drifter, so I could get away with playing music for a living. At night, I was doing heavy electric blues and hillbilly shit at local bars for six hours. Shooter got me back into that mindset. The burden of becoming a troubadour is you’re standing in a position that gives you a clear perspective of the struggles of humans. When all is said and done, everyone is just swinging a hammer to survive”.
In addition to the title-track, The Lonesome Drifter is set to feature an array of never-heard-before offerings, including Charley Crockett's much-loved cover of ‘Jamestown Ferry’, which originally appeared on his 2017 record, Lil G.L.'s Honky Tonk Jubilee.
The famously prolific artist released two albums last year, along with the cutting single, ‘Hey Mr. Nashville’, with 2025 already shaping up to be another big year for Crockett fans.
