Riley Green is quickly establishing himself as one of the most prolific artists in country music, with the Alabama crooner maintaining a steady flow of releases over the past two years.
When he's not dropping stellar albums and EPs, he's treating us to unreleased song teasers. It may not be Christmas anymore, but that doesn't seem to be deterring Riley Green from being in a generous spirit - and from keeping his Christmas tree up...in February. The latest gift we've received from Santa Green is a striking ode that finds a protagonist reflecting on the mistakes they made during a relationship.
Despite what the title, ‘Make It Rain’, might suggest, this isn't a left-field, strip-club crossover from Riley Green. Instead, it's a beautifully intricate ballad, with the ‘Different ‘Round Here’ hitmaker again showcasing why he remains one of the best songwriters in town.
Across a moody, downcast instrumental, Riley Green mournfully reflects on his inability to prevent a painful break-up through a colourful array of weather-based imagery, “I can't make the moon glow / I can't make a grey storm-cloud / I can't make the wind blow, and the sun come out / I can't make the waves break / I can't make the whole sky blue / I can't do a lot of things, but there's one thing that I can do”.
He goes on, “I can make it rain / I can make her tears fall down / Take everything that we used to be / And leave it puddled up on the ground / Yeah, I can make it flood / Watch it wash it all away / Take all our love / And pour it down the drain”.
Hilariously, in the Instagram video caption, Riley Green has ensured he's a step ahead of any fans planning to mock him for not having taken his Christmas tree down yet, “Song I just wrote called…”Make It Rain” hope yall like it… also first person to make a smartass remark about my Christmas tree still being up is gettin blocked”.
If holding onto the holiday spirit is inspiring Riley Green to pen gems like ‘Make It Rain’, then we have no issue with the ‘Worst Way’ singer-songwriter keeping his tree up all year-round. There's no release date yet for this latest track, but given fans’ responses so far, we're hoping Green is left with no choice but to drop ‘Make It Rain’ ASAP.

“I can't make the moon glow
I can't make a grey storm-cloud
I can't make the wind blow, and the sun come out
-
I can't make the waves break
I can't make the whole sky blue
I can't do a lot of things, but there's one thing that I can do
-
I can make it rain
I can make her tears fall down
Take everything that we used to be
And leave it puddled up on the ground
-
Yeah, I can make it flood
Watch it wash it all away
Take all our love
And pour it down the drain
Yeah, I can make it rain
I can make it rain
-
Oh, I can't make her stay
I can't make her take me back
I can't make her miss me, naw, I can't do none of that
-
I can't make her smile
I can't make her hurt no less
I can't unbreak her heart, but I can leave it soaking wet
-
Because I can make it rain
I can make her tears fall down
Take everything that we used to be
And leave it puddled up on the ground
-
Yeah, I can make it flood
Watch it wash it all away
Take all our love
And pour it down the drain
Yeah, I can make it rain
I can make it rain”
