With all the honors, the performances, the unlikely duets, there is always promise in the air during the Academy of Country Music Awards. This year, its 60th annual event was no different, especially when Reba McEntire, Lainey Wilson and Miranda Lambert took the stage.
The three cross-generational stars teamed up during the Thursday night (May 8) ceremony to debut a very special collaboration, dubbed 'Trailblazer'.
At the moment unreleased, the name-dropping ode to the female legends of the country genre was one that seemed to come about naturally. While co-writing the song alongside Brandy Clark, Wilson and Lambert were devoted to honoring the women who came before and inspired their own careers.
“We were just having a conversation about how both [Lambert and McEntire] have influenced me and [about] passing the torch and blazing trails for each other,” Wilson said in an interview with Billboard, sharing the song's inspiration. “Generation after generation, it’s going to continue, but we got to keep blazing those trails for the next one.”
The two knew McEntire was the obvious choice to join them on the track.
The night's performance saw all three of them – draped in coordinating chestnut suede and turquoise flourishes – take their turns trading verses, but with the chorus, the trio became an undeniable powerhouse. Their voices were made to mingle against the Western-textured opus.
Just as McEntire is the night's Master of Ceremonies, Wilson is not just one of the night's performers. She is also up for Entertainer of the Year, Female Artist of the Year, as well as having recently taken home the pre-ceremony honor of Artist-Songwriter of the Year. Her single '4x4xU' is also in the running for Song of the Year and her latest project, Whirlwind, is up for Album of the Year.
